First Round Notebook - Inside The Numbers

NFL Draft Central

Round 1
1
Kansas City Chiefs
Player: Eric Fisher
Height: 7-7
Weight: 306
Hometown: Rochester Hills, MI
Class: 2013 SR
Position: OT
Rating:
Overall Rank: 1
Pos Rank: 1

Head Coach: Andy Reid
2012 Record: 2-14

ANALYSIS: Kansas City goes for the more athletic offensive tackle in Eric Fisher over Luke Joeckel. While Joeckel is the safer pick of the two, playing against better competition from the SEC and Big 12, Fisher has more long term upside.

Round 1
2
Jacksonville Jaguars
Player: Luke Joeckel
Height: 7-6
Weight: 306
Hometown: Arlington, TX
College: Texas A&M
Class: 2013 JR
Position: OT
Rating:
Overall Rank: 2
Pos Rank: 2

Head Coach: Gus Bradley
2012 Record: 2-14

ANALYSIS: Jags get a good safe pick with Luke Joeckel at tackle. They need help everywhere but now they have bookend guys with he and Eugene Monroe. It's an offensive league and Jacksonville will be much better up front with this addition.

Round 1
3
Miami Dolphins
Player: Dion Jordan
Height: 7-6
Weight: 248
Hometown: Chandler, AZ
College: Oregon
Class: 2013 SR
Position: DE
Rating:
Overall Rank: 3
Pos Rank: 1

Head Coach: Joe Philbin
2012 Record: 7-9

ANALYSIS: Miami trades up to Oakland's spot at No. 3. Everyone was thinking there they would select Lane Johnson. But the pick was for the athletic defensive end Dion Jordan from Oregon. This is a shocker, as the Dolphins need OT help. But it goes to show you teams will go for the best available player on their board. To get Jordan they knew they have to get in front of Philadelphia.

Round 1
4
Philadelphia Eagles
Player: Lane Johnson
Height: 7-6
Weight: 303
Hometown: Groveton, TX
College: Oklahoma
Class: 2013 SR
Position: OT
Rating:
Overall Rank: 9
Pos Rank: 3

Head Coach: Chip Kelly
2012 Record: 4-12

ANALYSIS: Philadelphia grabs the 3rd ranked offensive tackle with Lane Johnson. He can play on both the right and left side and gives Chip Kelly a good, young and athletic cornerstone for his fast break Eagles offense.

College: BYU
Class: 2013 SR

Pos Rank: 2

Head Coach: Jim Schwartz

6
Cleveland Browns
Height: 6-4
Weight: 241
Hometown: West Monroe, LA

Class: 2013 JR
Position: DE

Hometown: Wilmington, NC
Class: 2013 SR
Position: OG
Rating:
Overall Rank: 14
Pos Rank: 2

Head Coach: Bruce Arians
2012 Record: 5-11

ANALYSIS: Arizona saw the top three pass rushers and offensive tackles taken off the board in the first six picks. They get a super guard in Cooper and this fills an enormous need. Carson Palmer can still throw the rock but you have to protect him up the middle because he lacks great mobility. Cooper can move and is a terrific run blocker as well.

Round 1
8
St. Louis Rams
Player: Tavon Austin
Height: 6-8
Weight: 174
Hometown: Baltimore, MD
College: West Virginia
Class: 2013 SR

Pos Rank: 1

Head Coach: Jeff Fisher
2012 Record: 7-8

ANALYSIS: This is a great match with Austin and the Rams. They have a need at receiver and in the slot and they just landed the draft's most explosive player. Hard to believe that this 5-foot-8 speedster from West Virginia is the first non-linemen taken in the draft.

Round 1
9
New York Jets
Player: Dee Milliner
Height: 6-11.5
Weight: 201
Hometown: Millbrook, AL
College: Alabama
Class: 2013 JR
Position: CB
Rating:
Overall Rank: 8
Pos Rank: 1

Head Coach: Rex Ryan
2012 Record: 6-10

ANALYSIS: Milliner has to big shoes to fill in New York after the Jets traded Darrelle Revis to Tampa Bay. But this is the top cornerback in the draft that is used to the pressure and big games being from the University of Alabama.

Round 1
10
Tennessee Titans
Height: 6-2
Weight: 317
Hometown: Atlanta, GA
College: Alabama
Class: 2013 SR
Position: OG
Rating:
Overall Rank: 11
Pos Rank: 1

Head Coach: Mike Munchak
2012 Record: 6-10

ANALYSIS: Warmack is a masher who started the past three seasons at Alabama. He has greater arm length than Joeckel and Fisher and if he gets his hands on you it's over. Warmack delivers a great punch and should help kick start the Titans run game.

Round 1
11
San Diego Chargers
Player: D.J. Fluker
Height: 6-4.5
Weight: 339
Hometown: Foley, AL
College: Alabama
Class: 2013 JR
Position: OT
Rating:
Overall Rank: 17
Pos Rank: 4

Head Coach: Mike McCoy
2012 Record: 7-9

ANALYSIS: Fluker is a road grader at right tackle who fills a huge need on the San Diego offensive front. While he excels at his run blocking he needs to improve in pass pro. Fluker could also be an unreal offensive guard.

Round 1
12
Oakland Raiders
Player: D.J. Hayden
Height: 6-11
Weight: 191
Hometown: Missouri City, TX
College: Houston
Class: 2013 SR
Position: CB
Rating:
Overall Rank: 38
Pos Rank: 4

Head Coach: Dennis Allen
2012 Record: 4-12

ANALYSIS: Hayden is the miracle story of this draft. He tore a vien (inferior vena cava) which carries blood back to the heart during practice last fall. It was a scary injury and he was recently cleared to play. This is a defensive back with cover abilities and great ball skills.

Round 1
13
New York Jets
Height: 6-2
Weight: 294
Hometown: St. Louis, MO
College: Missouri
Class: 2013 SR
Position: DT
Rating:
Overall Rank: 13
Pos Rank: 3

Head Coach: Rex Ryan
2012 Record: 6-10

ANALYSIS: In somewhat of a surprise pick the Jets grabbed Sheldon Richardson. He's a quick and disruptive defensive tackle that's better suited in a 4-3 scheme as a 3-technique. Ne York must feel he can play the 5-tech and that he projects as a better pass rusher than Star Lotulelei.

Round 1

Weight: 237
Hometown: Virginia Beach, VA
College: Florida State
Class: 2013 SR
Position: QB
Rating:
Overall Rank: 137
Pos Rank: 8

Head Coach: Doug Marrone
2012 Record: 6-10

ANALYSIS: Bills GM Buddy Nix fulfilled his promise of drafting a franchise quarterback, But can Manuel by that guy after being so inconsistent at Florida State? There's no question he has the physical tools but he never put it together at FSU.

Round 1
17
Pittsburgh Steelers
Player: Jarvis Jones
Height: 6-2
Weight: 245
Hometown: Columbus, GA
College: Georgia
Class: 2013 JR

Pos Rank: 1

Head Coach: Mike Tomlin
2012 Record: 8-8

Pos Rank: 4

Head Coach: Jim Harbaugh

Rating:
Overall Rank: 48

Hometown: Charlottesville, VA
College: Oregon
Class: 2013 SR
Position: OG
Rating:
Overall Rank: 42
Pos Rank: 3

Head Coach: Marc Trestman
2012 Record: 10-6

ANALYSIS: Long is a great athlete that projects higher at guard than tackle but could play both positions. He did at Oregon. Long orginally signed with FSU to play baseball. He was a pitcher. He's the son of Howie Long and brother of Chris (St. Louis Rams).

Round 1
21

Pos Rank: 2

Head Coach: Marvin Lewis
