2015 NFL draft: Shelton vs. D-linemen elite

Comparing Danny Shelton’s defensive statistics (vs. the run, the pass, along with positive and negative plays) to the other elite defensive linemen prospects for the 2015 NFL draft.

With one third of the 2014 college football season having been completed, NFL teams are rearranging their draft boards before the cross-checking and national scouts head out on the road to further evaluate the talent that area scouts have been reporting on. With the league placing a much bigger emphasis in finding dominant nose guards to play in that alignment at the next level, it has become clear to all that Washington’s Danny Shelton has not only separated himself from the pack, he is leaving a cloud of dust behind him on the road to the NFL.

These charts compare Shelton’s performance during the first part of the 2014 season to those of the top collegiate nose guards/defensive tackles that played the zero, one- and two- technique and are eligible for the 2015 NFL Draft, using their current 2014 season performances for this project. The 2015 NFL Draft Class includes Michael Bennett (Ohio State), Carl Davis (Iowa), Tyeler Davison (Fresno State), Eddie Goldman (Florida State) and Sheldon Day (Notre Dame).

Some of the players rated as early round draft prospects prior to the 2014 that are not included on this list are Christian Covington (Rice), as he has missed playing time due to a knee injury and has recorded just five tackles in three brief appearances. Undersized Gabe Wright (Auburn) was moved from the middle to defensive end, his likely pro position. Ellis McCarthy (UCLA) was also omitted, as he has yet to reclaim his starting job and has recorded just five tackles and an assisted sack through four contests. To compile this report card, I examine each of the athlete’s average game performance in detailed categories vs. the run and also in passing situations.
