Start of NFL camps not kind to all

Several notable players won’t start training camp on the practice field fully healthy, with the Cowboys and Bills among the hardest hit.

For the Dallas Cowboys, it was an unlucky seven. Seven Cowboys weren’t able to start practice as training camp kicked off as they were placed on various lists that will sideline them for various lengths of time.

Among the most notable were LB Rolando McClain, RB Darren McFadden and T Chaz Green, who were all declared physically unable to perform.

The Cowboys also started with LB Mark Nzeocha on non-football injury and C Shane McDermott was on NFI/Illness list, as well as placing DE Jeremy Mincey on the reserve/did not report list and LB Keith Rivers on the reserve/retired list.

A day early, the Cowboys had placed LB Cameron Lawrence and T Ryan Miller on injured reserve, ending their seasons, and earlier in the week RB Ryan Williams was placed on injured reserve.

The Buffalo Bills also reported to training camp with injuries keeping a few players out of action at the start of practices.

The Bills placed DE Mario Williams, CB Leodis McKelvin and K Dan Carpenter on the non-football injury list, meaning they can be taken off that at any time.

But the Bills and Cowboys were far from the only team with players reporting to camp with non-football injuries.

  • The Baltimore Ravens will be without CB Ladarius Webb for the first practices, too.

  • The Cleveland Browns will be with LB Darius Eubanks, WR Marlon Moore and RB Glenn Winston.

  • In New Orleans, long snapper Justin Drescher won’t be active at the start of camp.

  • The Washington Redskins round out the list of teams placing players on NFI on Thursday, with LB Ja’Gared Davis taking that spot.

In Pittsburgh, LB Shawn Lemon failed his physical and was placed on waivers. The Steelers added defensive back Jordan Sullen in his place.

Others were simply placed on waivers, including Cardinals CB Alfonzo Dennard and Chiefs RB Cyrus Gray.

The Titans placed TE Dorin Dickerson on injured reserve, ending his season.

Others who were declared physically unable to perform: Falcons T Lamar Holmes, Ravens DT Casey Walker, Buffalo TE Chris Manhertz and DB Cam Thomas, Panthers WR DeAndre Presley and TE Brandon Williams, Bengals LB Vontaze Burfict, DE Margus Hunt and LB Sean Porter, Jaguars DT Sen’Derrick Marks and DB James Sample, Saints S Jairus Byrd, WR Marques Colston and DE Glenn Foster, Titans NT Sammie Lee Hill, Cardinals TE Jermaine Gresham, Bears WR Kevin White, Lions RB Joique Bell, DE Jason Jones and T LaAdrian Waddle, Packers LB Mike Neal, Dolphins WR DeVante Parker, Jets G Willie Colon, RB Stevan Ridley and DT Kevin Vickerson, and 49ers C Daniel Kilgore.

On Wednesday, several other notable names around the NFL were placed on the temporary non-football injury list: Cardinals TE Troy Niklas and LB Zack Wagenmann, Packers CB Quinten Rollins, Chiefs QB Tyler Bray and LB Ramik Wilson and Patriots RB LeGarrette Blount and DT Alan Branch.
