Carolina cleaning up in PFWA awards; Cam Newton named MVP

The Carolina Panthers’ 15-1 season and advancement to the NFC Championship game has them garnering numerous honors from the Professional Football Writers Association as awards are handed out this week.

Carolina is cleaning up on the awards.

Carolina Panthers quarterback Cam Newton was named the NFL MVP by the Pro Football Writers Association of America (PFWA) and the Panthers placed a league-high four players – Newton, center Ryan Kalil, middle linebacker Luke Kuechly and cornerback Josh Norman – on the 2015 PFWA All-NFL team.

Houston Texans defensive lineman J.J. Watt was the named the NFL Defensive Player of the Year for the second consecutive season.

Newton started all 16 games in 2015 and threw for 3,837 yards, 35 touchdowns and a 99.4 passer rating while also rushing 132 times for 636 yards and a team-leading 10 touchdowns. He is the only player in NFL history with at least 30 passing TDs and 10 rushing TDs in a single season.

Watt, in his fifth season, had 76 total tackles (57 solo) and a league-leading 17.5 sacks for 117.5 yards. He also led the NFL with 50 quarterback hits and 29 tackles for loss. He set career highs with 10 quarterback hits vs. Tennessee on Nov. 1, and tied a career high with six tackles for loss vs. Kansas City on Sept. 13.

The PFWA also named its All-NFL and All-Rookie teams this week.

Nine players repeated from the PFWA's 2014 All-NFL team: Kuechly, Pittsburgh Steelers wide receiver Antonio Brown, New England Patriots tight end Rob Gronkowski, Baltimore Ravens guard Marshal Yanda, Dallas Cowboys tackle Tyron Smith, Cleveland Browns tackle Joe Thomas, Watt, Denver Broncos outside linebacker Von Miller and Philadelphia Eagles punt returner Darren Sproles. Watt was selected to the PFWA's All-NFL team for the fourth consecutive season, the longest current streak among active players, while Kuechly and Thomas were voted All-NFL for the third consecutive season.

St. Louis Rams (now the Los Angeles Rams) running back Todd Gurley was selected as the 2015 Rookie of the Year and the Offensive Rookie of the Year, and Kansas City Chiefs cornerback Marcus Peters was the 2015 Defensive Rookie of the Year. Both were first-round picks of their respective teams.

Gurley,  picked No. 10 overall out of Georgia, rushed 229 times for 1,106 yards and 10 touchdowns in 13 games, while averaging 4.8 yards per attempt. He led all NFL rookies in rushing yards  and was third overall in the NFL after missing the first two weeks of the season while recovering from a knee injury suffered in college.

Peters, drafted No. 18 overall out of Washington, tied for the NFL lead in interceptions with eight, led the league in interception yards with 280 and tied for first in the NFL in passes defensed with 26. He intercepted the first pass he saw in his NFL career, and he returned a pair of picks for touchdowns. He finished fourth on the Chiefs in total tackles with 60.
