How Muhammad Ali molded the Harbaugh family

Jack, John, and Jim Harbaugh were three of the many individuals who were influenced and inspired by the life of Muhammad Ali.

Boxing legend Muhammad Ali recently passed away at the age of 74. But in those 74 years, he impacted the lives of countless others with his achievements both inside and outside of the ring.

One family that was significantly molded by Muhammad Ali is the Harbaugh family.

Coaches John and Jim Harbaugh grew up watching and learning from Muhammad Ali, and their father, Jack Harbaugh, used Ali as an inspiration to help himself become a more effective father and football coach.

Muhammad Ali visited John Harbaugh’s Baltimore Ravens in 2012, and while he was there, Jack Harbaugh gave a powerful speech about Ali’s greatness.

He talked about how the famous Ali quote “What’s my name?” became a battle cry for his sons and for the teams that he has coached. He went on to say that Muhammad Ali is his hero, and that he, his family, and his teams have all been molded by Ali.

John Harbaugh spoke next, and added that Ali molded an entire generation. He also said that Ali changed the world, but not just in the ring.

Ali spoke to the team next, and later that season, the Ravens went on to win the Super Bowl.

Muhammad Ali will be greatly missed, but his memory will live on through those who he has inspired.
