Three-and-out: NFL’s best matchups of Week 6

The AFC doesn’t have many powerhouses squaring off this weekend, but the NFC presents some strong matchups on Sunday afternoon.

PHILADELPHIA EAGLES (3-1) AT WASHINGTON REDSKINS (3-2)

The Washington Redskins have won three of the last four, including the last two, against the Philadelphia Eagles, but after changing coaches (to Doug Pederson) and quarterbacks (to rookie Carson Wentz), the Eagles are looking like a playoff contender in the suddenly interesting NFC East.

Wentz has a passer rating above 100 in three of his four games and has seven touchdowns and only one interception – his first career pick was thrown in Week 5. Kirk Cousins has more yards, but he hasn’t been as efficient, equaling Wentz’s touchdown passes but also throwing five interceptions.

But as much as Wentz and Cousins will be the storyline – quarterbacks always are – Philadelphia has seen a resurgence of defense. The Eagles boast the second-ranked defense in the league and Washington is way down at 27th. If the Redskins want to equal the Eagles’ record in the NFC East, they will have to overcome that.

DALLAS COWBOYS (4-1) AT
GREEN BAY PACKERS (3-1)

No doubt the quarterbacks will dominate the discussion in this matchup, but perhaps the biggest surprise in this NFC matchup between the Dallas Cowboys and Green Bay Packers has been the incredible play of rookie Dak Prescott, who took over for an injured Tony Romo. Through five games and 155 passes, he hasn’t thrown an interception, the longest streak to start a season by a rookie quarterback in NFL history. In fact, Prescott has outplayed Aaron Rodgers with more completions, attempts and yards and a higher passer rating, although Prescott has only four touchdown passes. With Prescott behind center, Cole Beasley has been the favorite target with 27 catches for 332 yards.

Rodgers has nine touchdowns and only three interceptions and the Packers are trying to figure out their offense, now ranked 25th in yardage, with the return of Jordy Nelson, who leads them with 21 catches for 244 yards and five touchdowns. RB Eddie Lacy is also finding his stride, averaging 5.5 yards per carry and bringing back balance in Green Bay, but there are legitimate questions about the health in the Green Bay backfield.

Still, when it comes to a one-two punch of quarterback and running back, few teams have it better than Prescott and rookie Ezekiel Elliott, who already leads the league with 546 yards, adding five touchdowns and a 5.0-yard average. Between the running game and passing game – each ranked fifth in the NFL – the Cowboys have the second-ranked offense in the league.

While the Cowboys are looking to keep their lead in the NFC East, the Packers are chasing the undefeated Vikings, who are on bye, and need this win to avoid falling two games back.

ATLANTA FALCONS (4-1) AT
SEATTLE SEAHAWKS (3-1)

With Julio Jones and Matt Ryan coming off monster games, the Atlanta Falcons already have a commanding lead in the NFC South and the worst it would be, even with a loss this weekend, is two games. Their offensive numbers have been impressive, bordering on staggering.

Ryan leads the NFL with 1,740 yards, averaging 340 yards per game in his last seven outings, leads with a 126.1 rating and is second with 12 touchdowns this season. He also has a strong receiving corps led by Jones (second in the NFC with 517 yards) and an impressive 1-2 punch in the backfield with Tevin Coleman (163 yards from scrimmage last week) and Devonta Freeman (410 yards rushing this season).

Still, even with all that offensive firepower, it likely won’t be easy against the Seattle Seahawks. They have the top-ranked defense – first in yardage, second in passing yards, seventh in rushing yards and second in first downs allowed per game.

LB K.J. Wright has had at least six tackles in 13 straight games and LB Bobby Wagner had 10 tackles and a sack in their last game. CB Richard Sherman had two interceptions last time and leads the NFL with 28 interceptions since 2010, and S Earl Thomas had an interception in their last game.

So far, the Seahawks offense has been pretty middle of the road, but Russell Wilson is averaging more than 260 yards a game, has five touchdowns and only one interception. WR Doug Baldwin leads Seattle with 24 catches for 330 yards and has eight touchdowns in his last five home games.

The Seahawks clearly have the better defense. The Falcons clearly have the more  explosive offense. And both teams are looking to avoid their second loss of the season.
