Scouting C-USA: South Florida

Talk about an impressive start; soon after moving up from division I-AA, the Bulls turned in a 9-2 campaign last season. Yet this once independent school was snubbed in the post-season in 2002. It is a program on the rise and one that's recently offered several solid middle round draft picks.

Senior receiver Huey Whitaker will get more notoriety and notice as the season goes on now that his team plays in a conference. Whitaker is a big bodied wide out with sure hands and the ability to make the difficult catch on third down. He lacks the deep speed but is the consummate possession receiver with potential for the next level. Center Alex Herron is one of the better unknown commodities in the country. Explosive on the pivot and a lineman that dominates at the point, Herron is effective as both a run or pass blocker. He presently lacks the great size but has some growth potential and the junior should be near the top of the center's list in 2005.

Most of the prospects on defense are of the late round variety. Maurice Jones is a smart linebacker with potential on the weak-side. Safeties JR Reed and Kevin Verpaele are solid run stuffers while corner Ron Hemingway has good cover skills and could make a move up draft boards.
