-- QB Daunte Culpepper suffered three fractures in the transverse process, a small bone near the bottom of the spin. He won't practice until Friday, if at all this week. It normally takes two to six weeks to come back from, but the Vikings haven't ruled Culpepper out for the 49ers game.
Randy Moss finally revealed to the team Sunday that he has been playing with
back spasms sine the season-opening victory at Green Bay. Moss will not practice
this week, but coach Mike Tice said he will play, even though the team will list
him as questionable.
-- DL Billy Lyon strained his left calf
against the Lions and did not return. He'll be questionable.
LB Nick Rogers strained his right buttock against the Lions, but he'll probably
play against the 49ers.
-- FS Jack Brewer, who hasn't played
since suffering a chest injury in the final preseason game, is expected to
return this week. He's the Vikings' best special teams player.
-- Doug Chapman, who has missed two consecutive games because of a high-ankle
sprain and sore Achilles' tendon, will be probable this week.
WR D'Wayne Bates bruised his foot against the Bears two weeks ago and did not
play against the Lions. He'll be probable this week.
-- FS Brian Russell has swept the rest of the NFC North's quarterbacks, intercepting Brett Favre, Kordell Stewart and Joey Harrington. Coach Mike Tice admitted he didn't
think Russell had a chance to win the starting free safety
-- DL Kevin Williams, who moves from end to nose
tackle in the nickel defense, hasn't had great statistical games. But he is
pushing the pocket on passing downs. The same can be said for DT Chris Hovan.
-- DE Lance Johnstone has benefited from less playing
time. The former starter at right end plays only in the nickel. That has made
the 250-pounder a lot fresher. He had 1 1/2 sacks against the Lions, including a
9-yarder that pushed the Lions out of field goal range.
Chuck Wiley, a sturdy player who was one of the last to make the final roster,
will be activated this week because of the calf injury to Billy Lyon.
