Two Round Mock Draft III

Just a few hours left before the big day, and time to make some projections. Tony Pauline and Adam Caplan came together and offer TFY Draft Preview's initial two round mock.

1 Giants (NY Giants) Eli Manning QB Mississippi
Reason: We feel strongly that the Giants will acquire this pick before the draft starts so that they can select their QB of the future.
Other Options: Staying at #4 and selecting Gallery if he drops.
2 Cleveland (Oak) Robert Gallery T Iowa
Reason: They covet a LT and they'll trade up to get one.
Other Options: If they stay at #7, Tommie Harris or DeAngelo Hall are possibilities.
3 Arizona Larry Fitzgerald WR Pittsburgh
Reason: New head coach Dennis Green is familiar with Fitzgerald dating back to his days with the Vikings. Green loves Fitzgerald's upside and has a history of drafting offensive skills players.
Other Options: If Fitzgerald is unavailable, this could be the spot where we have our first surprise as the Cards have Kellen Winslow Jr. highly ranked and they could tab the tight end. They also like Sean Taylor.
4 San Diego Phillip Rivers QB  NC State
Reason: They have liked Rivers as much as any team and they know they can get him at this spot.
Other Options: If they stay at #1, Manning would be the selection. Outside chance of them taking Gallery.
5 Washington Sean Taylor S Miami-Fl
Reason: It's a close call here between Taylor and Winslow. They badly need to improve their secondary with CB Champ Bailey gone and Taylor will help them do that immediately.
Other Options: A trade up for Gallery or Winslow.
6 Detroit Kellen Winslow Jr TE Miami-Fl
Reason: The franchise believes it is too early for Steven Jackson and the secondary needs a quick infusion of youth at the safety spot.
Other Options: Trading down a few slots and then selecting Jackson.
7 Oakland Roy Williams WR Texas
Reason: They're looking for another replacement for their ancient starting WRs and Williams will team up with WR Jerry Porter to start in 2005 and beyond.
Other Options: Oakland could stay at #2 to get Gallery.
8 Atlanta DeAngelo Hall CB Va Tech
Reason: The Falcons need help at CB and they'll get that with Hall.
Other Options: A healthy Tommie Harris is a consideration here.
9 Jacksonville Kenechi Udeze DE USC
Reason: The final piece to one of the NFL's top young defensive lines. A better run defender than veteran DE Hugh Douglas and should see a lot of one-on-one blocking assignments with Stroud and Henderson clogging the middle.
Other Options: Roy Williams and/or DeAngelo Hall if available with the sleeper pick being Will Smith at this spot.
10 Houston Vince Wilfork DT Miami-Fl
Reason: Defensive line help is an area of need and Wilfork is one of the better two-gap lineman in the draft which club's who employ the 3-4 defensive scheme look for.
Other Options: A top cornerback (Hall if available), Harris, and don't be shocked if they select a wide out.
11 Pittsburgh Ben Roethlisberger QB Miami-Ohio
Reason: The Steelers desperately need a passer for the future and Roethlisberger is excellent value here.
Other Options: Dunta Robinson is serious consideration in this slot because of CB is a need position for the club.
12 New York Jets Dunta Robinson  CB South Carolina
Reason: The Jets are in need of a starting corner and Robinson fits the bill.
Other Options: They also may trade down three-to-four slots and select Jon Vilma or another linebacker.
13 Buffalo Will Smith DE Ohio State
Reason: Buffalo has been looking for a pass rusher the past three seasons and Smith, who is soaring up boards, fits the bill.
Other Options: A WR is a consideration.
14 Chicago Tommie Harris DT Oklahoma
Reason: The defense desperately needs help inside and Harris fits the profile of what they're looking for at DT.
Other Options: Outside (strong-side) linebacker is a consideration here.
15 Tampa Bay  DJ Williams OLB Miami
Reason: He's a nice upgrade over projected starting OLB Ryan Nece.
Other Options: Shawn Andrews is also a possibility here or a WR or Stephen Jackson.
16 San Francisco  Reggie Williams WR Washington
Reason: They need receiver to replace Terrell Owens.  Could be dropping as we explained yesterday.
Other Options: A DE like Will Smith would be the pick should he fall.
17 Denver (from Cincinnati) Steven Jackson RB Oregon State
Reason: Denver could trade up to assure the services of Jackson but he offers assurance after the trade which sent RB Clinton Portis to Washington.
Other Options: A WR due to the retirement of veteran WR Ed McCaffrey will be sought and a linebacker is a strong consideration.
18 New Orleans Jonathan Vilma LB Miami-Fl
Reason: LB Orlando Ruff has not worked out and the linebacker core stills needs starters.  Could be dropping as we explained yesterday.
Other Options: A cornerback is a serious consideration at this slot as would be a big bodied wide out.
19 Minnesota Karlos Dansby OLB Auburn.
Reason: EJ Henderson will start in the middle and Dansby should immediately slide into Henri Crockett's spot.
Other Options: Jon Vilma is also a possibility here should he drop as he can play outside as well. The defense desperately needs an end but anyone besides Will Smith or Kenechi Udeze is a major reach at this point. A receiver is also a consideration here.
20 Miami  Shawn Andrews T Arkansas
Reason: Replacement for the departed Todd Wade.
Other Options: Lee Evans is being considered here and the Fish will also look at the linebackers.
21 New England (Balt) Chris Gamble CB Ohio State
Reason: Because of the Ty Law situation, Gamble is their man.
Other Options: Offensive tackle and linebacker are also considerations.
22 Dallas Kevin Jones RB Virginia Tech
Reason: They're still looking for a starting RB and Jones will take over that role immediately.
Other Options: They could trade down for a G such as Justin Smiley.
23 Seattle Darnell Dockett DT Florida State
Reason: Not the big-bodied run stuffer the Seahawks need but a talented defensive tackle none-the-less.
Other Options: Receiver is a slight option because of the quality still available on the board or a young outside linebacker to replace Chad Brown could be sought (Michael Boulware).
24 Cincinnati (Den) Derrick Strait CB Oklahoma
Reason: A consistent cover-corner that is a perfect fit for head coach Marvin Lewis' defense.
Other Options: The defense desperately needs an end.
25 Green Bay  Will Poole CB USC
Reason: With the Mike McKenzie situation still up in the air, they need a possible replacement. Even if he returns, they have nothing behind him of note.  Could be dropping as we explained yesterday.
Other Options: JP Losman if the trade for Tim Couch looks to be dead.
26 St. Louis Lee Evans WR Wisconsin
Reason: Isaac Bruce is getting up there in years and the Mike Martz offense is predicated on speed, something which Evans has plenty of.
Other Options: JP Losman if he falls as Marc Bulger is yet to sign a contract extension. Darion Scott could be the surprise pick here because they need a DE to replace Grant Wistrom.
27 Tennessee Dwan Edwards DT Oregon State
Reason: Whoever the pick is could be a reach. Losing DT Robaire Smith hurt and Edwards will help to replace him in the lineup.
Other Options: The surprise pick at this slot could be Darion Scott since they lost DE Jevon Kearse in free agency.
28 Philadelphia Vernon Carey OL Miami-Fl
Reason: The Eagles need depth on the offensive line and Carey will give them that plus he can play at G or OT.
Other Options: They may trade up for Shawn Andrews. CBs such as Will Poole or Chris Gamble if they fall. Trading up for a shot at LBs Jon Vilma/DJ Williams are possibilities as is trading up for a RB.
29 Indianapolis Michael Boulware  OLB Florida St
Reason: They are in dire need of a play making LB.
Other Options: Poole or Gamble if they should fall.
30 Kansas City Rashaun Woods WR Oklahoma State
Reason: The fans want defense as does the front office but receiver is also a need and Woods is a perfect fit.
Other Options: Isaac Sopoago, Marcus Tubbs or another big defensive tackle.
31 Carolina Michael Clayton WR LSU
Reason: With Veteran WR Mushin Muhammad nearing the end of his career and the team lacking quality depth behind him, they'll look for Clayton here.
Other Options: Any corner that slides down would be seriously considered.
32 New England Michael Jenkins WR Ohio State
Reason: They need a WR with size and Jenkins will give them that.
Other Options: A cornerback or LB. Teddy Lehman is also a strong consideration.
