With the loss of most of their skill players, the top pro-prospects on offense reside on the line. Right tackle Joe Dunn is a king sized blocker yet a solid athlete who protects the strong side. Blocking with leverage and outstanding strength at the point, Dunn opens big holes for running game and works to finish off opponents. He is a solid prospect for the next level that could make a big move up draft boards. On the left side Jimmy Martin is a solid pass protector with a good feel for the position. Not dominant at the point of attack, his ultimate pro position could be inside at guard where he will receive late round consideration. Will Montgomery takes over the center position and is a powerful lineman that plays with terrific strength and explosion. Excelling as a run blocker, Montgomery is one to keep close eye on this season.
On defense Virginia Tech's next great defensive back comes in the form of Jimmy Williams. A secondary prospect with outstanding size, Williams is a top athlete with excellent cover techniques and plays to his measurables. As a sophomore last season Williams did an outstanding job at free safety but now moves to cornerback for the upcoming coming campaign. He is definitely a prospect with first round ability and could be a top 32 pick next April. Defensive end Jim Davis returns after sitting out last season with a torn chest muscle. In the past Davis has flashed abilities as a complete lineman and a front four player that can rush the passer or stuff the run. Unfortunately his career has been plagued with both injury and inconsistency. And while he has the underlying tools, Davis needs to pull the pieces together as a senior to move into the middle rounds. Linebacker Mikal Baaqee is a tough run stuffer in the middle yet a limited athlete and only a two down defender.
