Scouting Report: Carnell Williams

An explosive back with outstanding physical skill, Carnell Williams has been impressing scouts since his early days at Auburn.

Name: Carnell Williams School: Auburn
Ht: 5-11.5 Wt: 204 40: 4.46

The Good: Explosive ball carrier who combines speed, quickness and amazing elusiveness. Displays great field vision, instinct and patience. Waits for blocks develop then follows them. Quickly bounces it to the outside if nothing is available, can stop on a dime, cut back and makes defenders miss. Possesses a great stutter-step freezing defenders then leaving them grasping for air. Has a slashing style and slides off tackles, picking up extra yards. Displays great first step quickness and can switch it on at any time. Has a burst of speed and immediately gets through the hole then runs to daylight. At the same time a tough ball carrier that does not go down without a fight. Displays both strength and technique when called upon to block.

The Bad: Does not show power in his running nor is Williams a back that picks up much yardage off initial contact. Marginal receiver out of the backfield. Blocking intensity is not always there.

The Skinny: While he lacks the top size for an every down runner, Williams combines all the skills necessary to be a productive back in the NFL. His ability to create or elude defenders coupled with the speed to break games wide open makes him justifiably an early selection in next April's draft. Must round out his game but could be a primary back right out of the gate as a rookie.
