Scouting Report: Alex Smith

Already an outstanding pass catcher, Alex Smith is slowly turing into a complete tight end and is the apple of many-a-scouts eye for next April's NFL Draft.

Full Name: Alex Smith  School:  Stanford

Ht: 6-5    Wt: 255  40:   4.73

The Good: Athletic pass catching tight end with a well rounded game.  Fluid releasing off the line of scrimmage, displays focus and concentration, then extends to make the difficult catch in traffic.  Offers the quarterback a nice target, makes plays into the defensive secondary and remains focused throughout the action.  A fine athlete that runs well after the reception.  Blocks with leverage and displays adequate strength at the point of attack.  Stays square and controls opponents once engaged in a block.

The Bad: Not a dominant blocker with the ability to finish.  Does not possess the soft hands and does more body catching or clutches the pass against his frame.

The Skinny: A tight end that consistently makes plays down the field, Smith is a solid athlete that offers the offense another dimension for the passing game.  Stands to add bulk to his frame which would only improve his blocking, yet fits the type of tight end NFL teams are looking for today.
