'06 NFL Draft Watch: Texas Tech

Consistently a competitive program, the Red Raiders come off a surprising victory over Cal in the Holiday Bowl and look to improve upon last year. The program consistently puts solid talent into the middle frames of the NFL draft and will do so again next year.

Scouting the Big 12: Texas Tech

In Tech's passing system the ability to catch the ball is a necessity and it is something running back Taurean Henderson does well.  An explosive and elusive ball carrier with a burst of speed, Henderson is quick in all aspects and consistently works hard until the whistle blows.  Patient, he finds the running lanes or bounces around opponents to keep plays alive.  An terrific receiver out of the backfield, Henderson is a perfect third down back at the next level.  Junior wide out Jarrett Hicks has excellent size and solid pass catching skills.  Shielding opponents away with his frame, Hicks displays good eye\hand coordination and catches the ball away from his frame.  At the top of his game Hicks is a one-man show defenders have difficulty stopping.  Needing to improve his fundamentals, Hicks drops some very easy throws and is not a vertical threat.  Possessing a lot of potential for the next level, Hicks needs to pull it altogether on a consistent basis.  Senior Cody Fuller has all the intangibles his teammate does not; a sense of timing, anticipation and concentration throughout the action.  Extending in the middle of the field, he is a sure handed receiver who gets separation from defenders.  Not a deep threat or receiver who can run to long ball, Fuller possesses only average size and upside potential for the next level.  The tight end position does not get much action in the Red Raiders system yet Bristol Olomua shows potential for the next level.  A transfer from BYU, he is a solid pass catcher with growth potential and a prospect that looks like a good fit for a West Coast offense.  The team offers a pair of offensive lineman to watch starting with tackle E. J. Whitley.  A tall right tackle with solid footwork, Whitley effectively uses blocking angles and his pass protection skills will get him serious draft consideration.  Junior guard Manny Ramírez is a strong and powerful blocker who plays with a nasty attitude.  Attacking assignments, he is also intelligent yet not a knee bender and best in a small area.

On defense the top prospect and outside linebacker John Saldi.  A well sized player on the strong-side, good pre-draft workouts could push him to the late part of the middle rounds.
