Rookie running back J.J. Arrington remains the number-one in Arizona
Cardinals camp, though veteran Marcel Shipp is impressing. Shipp, a talented
back, is coming off leg and ankle injuries, which kept him out of competition
early in camp. But he has practiced and performed well in game conditions. While
Arrington is holding down the starting role at this time, Shipp should see
plenty of action early in the season and could supplant the rookie.
Willie Parker is expected to be named the starter for the Steelers regular-season opener, as veterans Duce Staley (knee surgery) and Jerome Bettis (calf) struggle with injuries. Wide receiver Hines Ward has yet to agree to terms of a deal with the team, but those talks are expected to intensify this week and a deal is expected prior to the regular season.
While veteran Gus Frerotte appears to have landed the starting quarterback
job in Miami, the hold on the spot may be short-lived. Head coach Nick Saban is
believed to be less than enthralled with the play of Frerotte and A.J. Feeley,
and could utilize both players early in the season. Additionally, the Dolphins
continue to talk with former Browns' quarterback Tim Couch and a workout could
be scheduled in a couple weeks.
New York Jets
Though the New York Jets remain quiet on the possibility of cornerback Ty Law playing in the regular season opener, those close to the cornerback believe Law will attempt to suit up and play in week one.
San Francisco 49ers
Due to rookie Frank Gore's less-than-captivating preseason, veteran Kevan Barlow is expected to be named the starting running back for the 49ers. Barlow has not endeared himself to the coaching staff and his time as the starter may be short-lived, until Gore is ready to handle the duties. Tim Rattay has easily beaten out rookie Alex Smith for the starting quarterback spot heading into the regular season, but the team is expected to have Smith see action during the season.
Quarterback Patrick Ramsey has won the Redskins starting job, almost by default. Veteran Mark Brunell has not looked good, while rookie Jason Campbell has displayed tremendous athletic ability, but inconsistency which will relegate the rookie to third quarterback status on game-day to start the season.
New York Giants
The New York Giants are worried about the depth at the quarterback position with the injury status of Eli Manning. Tim Hasselbeck and Jesse Palmer are the primary players in the event Manning was to miss any significant time (not expected). Talk around the league is the Giants may look to work out former Cleveland Browns quarterback Tim Couch and/or contact veteran Vinny Testaverde, but neither has transpired at this time.
J.P. Losman is struggling in Buffalo, which only means the Bills could be in for a rough road ahead. Committed to the second-year quarterback, the Bills were expected to be a rush-oriented team, but the play of Losman has the organization concerned. Despite less than desirable results throughout training camp and into the preseason games, Losman remains the starter, with veteran Kelly Holcomb waiting in the wings for the opportunity to play.
