Saturday was cutdown day around the NFL and Scout.com examines all the moves for all 32 teams.
Moves: Released running backs Erik Bickerstaff and Keylon Kincade, defensive tackle Leonardo Carson, safeties Rich Coady, Woody Dantzler and Lynn Scott, wide receiver Tom Crowder, tight ends Tony Curtis, Jeff Robinson and Sean Ryan, kicker Nick Novak, linebacker Keith O'Neil, tackle Kurt Vollers and guards-centers Matthew Tarullo and Tyson Walter; placed safety Justin Beriault and linebacker Kalen Thornton on injured reserve; acquired linebacker Scott Fujita from the Kansas City Chiefs for a 2006 sixth-round pick and a 2007 conditional pick.
Analysis: Carson was No.3 on the depth chart so it wasn't a surprise he was let go. Bickerstaff lost out to rookie Tyson Thompson at running back and he wasn't needed at fullback.
New York Giants
Moves: Terminated the contracts of linebacker Kevin Lewis, quarterback Jesse Palmer, running back Michael Cloud and offensive lineman Lewis Kelly; waived offensive linemen Wayne Lucier, Brandon Winey, Morgan Pears and Myniya Smith, running back Ryan Grant, wide receivers Mark Jones, Ataveus Cash and Michael Jennings, tight end Darius Williams, defensive linemen Jonas Seawright and Raheem Orr, linebackers James Maxwell and T.J. Hollowell and safety Curry Burns; signed running back Chad Morton.
Analysis: QB Jared Lorenzen won the No.3 job. The development of rookie RB Brandon Jacobs pushed Cloud off the roster. Derrick Ward will take the No.3 spot on the depth chart. The team is happy with their development at linebacker and with LB Barrett Green coming back that made Lewis expendable.
Moves: Signed wide receiver Darnerien McCants to a one-year contract; activated punter Dirk Johnson from the physically-unable-to-perform list; released defensive ends Hugh Douglas and Jamaal Green, centers Dominic Furio and Jamaal Jackson, wide receivers Michael Gasperson, Carlos Perez and Chauncey Stovall, quarterback Andy Hall, defensive tackles Norm Heuer and Keyonta Marshall, punter Sean Landeta, linebacker Martin Patterson, fullback Jon Ritchie, guards Steve Sciullo and Scott Young, tight end Andy Thorn.
Analysis: Head coach Andy Reid cut one of his favorite players in Douglas who clearly had nothing left from watching him in camp. The development of DE Juqua Thomas made Douglas and Green expendable. Josh Parry beat out Ritchie for the job. McCants will take the No.5 spot on the depth chart for Perez who should go to the practice squad. Hall may also make it to the practice squad. The team is high on Thorn and Patterson who could also find a spot on the practice squad. Young also should find a spot on the practice squad as he's versatile enough to play more than one position.
Moves: WAS: Released OL Jon Alston, LB Brandon Barnes, DB Rufus Brown, WR Kevin Dyson, WR Jamin Elliott, WR Jimmy Farris, OL Tyler Lenda, TE Robert Johnson, DL Aki Jones, DB Eric Joyce, LB Robert McCune, P Chris Mohr, WR Rich Parson, DB Siddeeq Shabazz, DE Ron Warner, DB Garnell Wilds and OL Mark Wilson.
Moves: Released CB Todd McMillon, LB LeVar Woods, RB Zach Abron, RB Antoineo Harris, LB Derrick Ballard, QB Ryan Dinwiddie, P Gabe Lindstrom, DE Shurron Pierson, OL A.J. Ricker, TE Darnell Sanders, TE Ron Johnson, CB Leroy Smith and DE Greg White. Placed WR Eddie Berlin and LB Rod Wilson on injured reserve and WR Airese Currie and FB Jason McKie on the reserve-non-football injury list.
Moves: CB Chris Cash, LB Johnathan Goddard, S Andrew Guman, WR Paris Hamilton, C/G Tyrone Hopson, T Jason Jimenez, DT Brandon Kennedy, WR David Kircus, WR Glen Martinez, FB Will Matthews, QB Todd Mortensen, G Rob Murphy, DE Eric Powell, TE Jason Randall, T Victor Rogers, CB Jeff Sanchez, WR Scottie Vines and RB Jamel White. WR Cliff Johnson is on the Reserve/Non-Football Injury NFL Europe list.
Analysis: Cash got caught up in a numbers game at cornerback. The team is carrying five cornerbacks at the moment. They're carrying just four receivers and KR/PR Eddie Drummond.
Moves: Acquired linebacker Robert Thomas from the St. Louis Rams for cornerback Chris Johnson; released quarterback J.T. O'Sullivan, running back Walt Williams, fullback Vonta Leach, wide receivers Craig Bragg, Sam Breeden, Jamal Jones and Andrae Thurman, tight end Sean McHugh, tackles-guards Brad Bedell and Joe Hayes, defensive tackles Cletidus Hunt and James Lee, defensive ends R-Kal Truluck and Seante Williams, linebackers Corey Jenkins, Nick McNeil and Ray Thompson and cornerbacks Chris Day and Leigh Torrence; placed safety Todd Franz and running back Joey Harris on injured reserve.
Analysis: The team is weak on depth at linebacker so the deal for Thomas does make some sense. O'Sullivan was beaten out by Craig Nall. Antonio Chatman won the No.5 job over Thurman and Bragg. Look for Bragg to get strong consideration for the practice squad. Hunt never proved he was worth the extension they gave him. Chalk that as one of the mistakes head coach Mike Sherman made when he was the general manager.
Moves: Released punter Travis Dorsch, kicker Aaron Elling, wide receivers Chris Jones and Ryan Hoag, safety Will Hunter, running backs ReShard Lee, Butchie Wallace and Adimchinobe Echemandu, tight ends Sean Berton, T.J. Cottrell and Richard Angulo, cornerbacks Adrian Ward and Ukee Dozier, linebacker Heath Farwell, tackle Shannon Snell, guards Chris Jahnke and Brandon Newton, defensive tackle Matt Mitrione and defensive end Earl Cochran; placed defensive tackle Steve Martin on injured reserve; placed wide receiver Aaron Hosack on the non-football injury list; acquired guard-center Melvin Fowler from the Cleveland Browns for tackle Nat Dorsey.
Analysis: Paul Edinger beat out Elling. The Chiefs could bring Elling in for a look due to the struggles of Lawrence Tynes. The coaching staff must feel good about the health of their top four backs so they let Lee, Wallace and Echemandu go. Fowler can play guard and center and is more versatile than Dorsey.
Moves: TE Mark Anelli, WR Brian Bratton, LB Michael Brown, FB Kevin Dudley, OT Shawn Draper, DT Anthony Herron, CB Byron Jones, LB John Leake, C Mike Mabry, WR Cole Magner, FS Shawn Mayer, FS Cam Newton, C Dave Pearson, OT Jared Peck, WR Will Pettis, CB James Thornton, DE Khaleed Vaughn, RB Jason Wright, waived-injured G Michael Moore, placed LB Jordan Beck and G Steve Herndon on injured-reserve.
Analysis: Magner and Pettis could make their way to the practice squad. The team is satisfied with the progress DE Brady Smith (neck) has been making coming back from his injury so that made Vaughn expendable.
Moves: Lorenzo Alexander DT, Joe Berger OG, Aaron Boone WR, Casey Cramer FB, Dan Curley TE, John Doty T, Attiyah Ellison DT, Marcus Floyd DB, Eddie Freeman DT, Will Hampton CB, Charles Hill DT, Efrem Hill WR, Isaac Hilton DE, Eddie Jackson CB, Brian Knight LB, Hugo Lira WR, Ben Johnson OT, Tupe Peko OC, Tom Rouen P, Sean Tufts LB. Matt Hill OT, Eric Shelton RB, Justin Smith LB were placed on injured reserve.
Analysis: Peko started some with the Colts last season so he should be able to find a job with another team. Jason Baker beat out Rouen for the job. Shelton would have been a weekly inactive had he not gotten injured in their final pre-season game.
New Orleans Saints
Moves: Placed WR Chase Lyman on injured reserve, released CB Jimmy Williams, DE Jimmy Verdon, WR Chris Vance, G Chad Setterstrom, FB Nate Schurman, LB Cabel Rohloff, WR Nate Poole, G Dwayne Ledford, OL Ike Ndukwe, RB Keith Joseph, G Augie Hoffman, WR Keron Henry, DT Howard Green, WR Talman Gardner.
Analysis: Gardner had a very good camp but then got hurt. It's possible they decide to bring him back later on due to lack of depth at receiver.
Tampa Bay Buccaneers
Moves: S Hamza Abdullah, LB Josh Buhl, G/C Jonathan Clinkscale, DT Delbert Cowsette, T Derrick Deese, K Todd France, LB Matt Grootegoed, TE Will Heller, C Scott Jackson, T Sam Lightbody, WR Derek McCoy, WR Terrance Metcalf, CB James Patrick, S Kalvin Pearson, WR DeAndrew Rubin, DE Josh Savage, DT Bryan Save, P Brian Simnjanovski, LB Jermaine Taylor, RB Derek Watson, DE Andrew Williams. Placed LB Jeff Gooch on injured reserve.
Moves: Released tackle Ian Allen, running back Damien Anderson, defensive tackle Tim Bulman, guard Rolando Cantu, kicker Matt Fordyce, tight ends Bobby Blizzard and Aaron Golliday, safeties Jermaine Hardy and Ernest Shazor, wide receivers Carlyle Holiday, Reggie Newhouse and Dan Sheldon, linebackers Isaac Keys and Lester Towns, defensive end Tyler King and cornerbacks Lamonte Reid and Robert Tate.
Analysis: James Jackson beat out Anderson for the No.3 job. The team will go with two undrafted free agent rookies as their backups at tight end. Shazor never really caught on to their defensive scheme. My how he's taken a fall in the past six months.
San Francisco 49ers
Moves: The 49ers waived veterans DE Tony Brown, LB Ray Wells, CB Willie Middlebrooks, G Scott Peters, CB Rayshun Reed and LB Richard Seigler, first-year players CB Allan Amundson, T Brendan Darby, C Norm Katnik, T Tim Provost and LB Matt Yates, and rookies FB Tony Ficklin, WR Marcus Maxwell, RB Bobby Purify and CB Daven Holly.
Analysis: Middlebrooks had a good camp but the team feels second-year CB Shawntae Spencer is going to be a solid starter. Maxwell could go to the practice squad.
Moves: Waived safeties Terreal Bierria and Omare Lowe, running backs Kerry Carter and Marquis Weeks, tight end Brock Edwards, defensive ends Kevin Emanuel and Christian Mohr, quarterback Gilbran Hamdan, cornerbacks Michael Harden and B.J. Tucker, center William Henry, fullback Tony Jackson, guards Andy King and Doug Nienhuis, punter Chris Kluwe, defensive tackles Cleveland Pinkney and Rashad Moore, linebackers Terrence Robinson, Tracy White and Cornelius Wortham and wide receiver Taco Wallace; terminated the contracts of wide receivers Jerome Pathon and Bobby Shaw.
Analysis: Maurice Morris (hamstring) who is expected to be ready for the start of the season beat out Carter for the backup job. RB Josh Scobey will likely return kicks and handle the No.3 job. Shaw and Pathon became expendable after the team signed veteran WR Peter Warrick.
St. Louis Rams
Moves: Released guard Darnell Alford, defensive tackles Jeremy Calahan and John Parrella, wide receivers Jeremy Carter and Dominique Thompson, centers Toby Cecil and Larry Turner, cornerback Kevin Garrett, running backs Joey Goodspeed and Dusty McGrorty, quarterback Jeff Smoker and safety Michael Stone. Traded linebacker Robert Thomas from the Green Bay Packers for cornerback Chris Johnson.
Analysis: Parella was trying to make a comeback but the team is very deep at defensive tackle. Rookie FB Madison Hedgecock who had a good camp and his more athletic beat out Goodspeed. Garrett was beaten out for a backup job by rookie CB Ronald Bartell. Thomas lost his starting job last year and never recovered. Most around the NFL view him as a speed linebacker that doesn't have a great feel for the position. Rookie QB Ryan Fitzpatrick who had a good camp beat out smoker.
Moves: TE Brad Cieslak, OL Jasen Esposito, LB Liam Ezekial, DE George Gause, FB Jon Goldsberry , WR Drew Haddad, LB Wendell Hunter, OL Dylan McFarland, DB Evan Oglesby, DB Lawrence Richardson, DE Constantin Ritzmann, QB Kevin Thompson, OL Ross Tucker, TE Rodney Trafford.
Analysis: Tucker's release was a surprise in that it leaves them next to no experience at any of the backup positions. Ritzmann had a decent camp and could find a spot on the practice squad.
Moves: Waived safeties Tony Bua, Deandre Eiland and Jack Hunt, running back Lamar Gordon, punter Donnie Jones, tight ends Donald Lee, John Owens and Jason Rader, wide receiver Maurice Mann, fullback Jamar Martin, guards Rodney Reed, Eric Wilson, Jason Thomas and Taylor Whitley, defensive tackles Reggie Rhodes and Dario Romero, defensive end Matt Walters and linebacker Winston Taylor; terminated the contracts of tackle Damion Cook and defensive tackle Larry Chester; placed center wade Smith, wide receiver Derrius Thompson and defensive tackle Kevin Vickerson on injured reserve; placed running back Ricky Williams on the reserve-suspended list; signed running back Jesse Chatman.
Analysis: The team tried to trade Gordon but to no avail. Rookie TE Alex Holmes appears to have won the No.3 job. Chester's release leaves the team light on depth at defensive tackle.
New England Patriots
Moves: Released linebackers Eric Alexander, Grant Steen and Andre Torrey, defensive linemen Rodney Bailey and Tom Sverchek, running back Kory Chapman, wide receivers Bam Childress, P.K. Sam and David Terrell, fullback Kyle Eckel, tight ends Joel Jacobs and Jed Weaver, tackles Victor Leyva and Jeff Roehl, safety Raymond Ventrone, guard Billy Yates and guard-center Gene Mruczkowski.
Analysis: Sam missed too much time in camp and never established himself despite doing well in their off-season program. Terrell started off well then fizzled. Bethel Johnson, Tim Dwight, and Andre Davis will fill out the No.3-6 receiver jobs. Davis is likely the No.4 man. Christian Fauria who is a better blocker beat out Weaver. Ventrone had a very good camp and should make the practice squad.
New York Jets
Moves: Waived defensive backs Atari Bigby, Aaron Francisco and Brandon Haw, running backs Terry Butler and Little John Flowers, quarterback Kevin Eakin, defensive linemen Joey Evans, Radell Lockhart and Tim McGill, wide receivers Chas Gessner, Terrence Stubbs, Harry Williams and Jovan Witherspoon, linebackers Dennis Haley and James Kinney, offensive linemen Michael King, Mike Kracalik and Chuck Missant and fullback Austine Nwabuis
Analysis: No real surprises. Flowers looked good in their final pre-season game but there wasn't any room left on the depth chart for him as Cedric Houston beat him out for the No.3 job. Gessner scored in the game at Philadelphia and had a good camp but the team has decided to go with only four receivers for the time being.
Moves: Terminated the contracts of kicker Wade Richey and long snapper Joe Maese; waived cornerback Bill Alford, defensive back Calvin Carlyle, tackle Dante Ellington, cornerback Mark Estelle, guard Phil Hawkins, running back Alex Haynes, safety Chris Kelley, cornerback Zack Norton running back Tellis Redmon, linebacker Matt Sinclair, linebacker Mike Smith, tight end Trent Smith, center Thatcher Szalay, defensive back Jamaine Winborne, and defensive tackle Matt Zelinski.
Analysis: Haynes and Redmon were competing for a roster spot with RB Musa Smith (leg) on PUP. It appears they'll just let BJ Sams hold the No.3 job for the time being.
Moves: Waived wide receivers Cliff Russell, Dante Ridgeway and Jamall Broussard, quarterback Casey Bramlet, defensive tackle Langston Moore, fullback Ronnie Ghent, tackle Pete Lougheed, cornerbacks Brandon Williams and Patrick Body, tight end Quincy Wilson, linebacker Derek Curry, safety Herana-Daze Jones and kicker Carter Warley; placed linebacker Caleb Miller on the physically-unable-to-perform list.
Analysis: Kevin Walker who had a great camp beat out Russell. Ridgeway was just claimed off of waivers this week from the Rams. Craig Krenzel beat out Bramley for the No.3 quarterback job. With K Shayne Graham's groin injury healed, Warley became expendable.
Moves: Released WR Richard Alston, WR C.J. Jones, LB Jamal Brooks, CB Dyshod Carter, OG Enoch DeMar, OG Mike Pucillo, S Michael Grant, QB Josh Harris, TE Paul Irons, RB Sultan McCullough, FB Ben Miller, LB Omar Nazel, DT J'Vonne Parker and OT Greg Randall. Placed DT Amon Gordon, LB Ivory McCoy, LB Renauld Williams, OT Jonathan Dunn and CB Antwan Harris on injured reserve. Placed OT Lewis Dawson on the reserve/non-football injury list.
Analysis: Alston became expendable due to the emergence of undrafted free agent WRs Brandon Rideau and Josh Cribbs. McCullough was facing an uphill battle. The team must feel confident that RB Lee Suggs is making satisfactory progress in coming back from his ankle injury.
Moves: Released LB Alonzo Jackson, QB Brian St. Pierre, S Russell Stuvaints, LS Mike Schneck, TE Walter Rasby, G Jim Jones, WR Fred Gibson, DE Shaun Nua, C Ben Claxton, DE Eric Taylor, LB Dedrick Roper, LB Andre Frazier, P Mike Barr, T Ulish Booker, WR Chris Collins, RB John Kuhn, CB Janssen Patton, LB Ronald Stanley
Analysis: Jackson never took to playing at linebacker after playing at end in college at Florida St. Charlie Batch beat St. Pierre out. Rasby should find a job, as he's a good blocker. Gibson's release was a small surprise being that he was a fourth-round pick but he could be a candidate for the practice squad.
Moves: OT Chad Beasley, OT Tim Brown, LB Frank Chamberlin, DE Jason Davis, LB Anthony Dunn, G Brandon Evans, TE Aaron Halterman, FS Jammal Lord, DE Alfred Malone, RB Adam Matthews, CB Chris McKenzie, LB Zeke Moreno, WR Donovan Morgan, QB Preston Parsons, CB Jon Pendergrass, LB Kenneth Pettway, P Cody Scates, K Chris Snyder, WR Reggie Swinton, QB B.J. Symons, WR Sloan Thomas, CB Jerron Wishom
Moves: Waived QB Tom Arth, DB Waine Bacon, DE Justin Brown, DB, Willie Ford, DE, Sean Guthrie, LB, Nick Hannah, G Trevor Hutton, LB Chris Laskowski, DE Josh Mallard, DB Jermaine Mays, OT Jim Newton, RB Vashon Pearson, OT David Porter, LB Andre Sommersell, WR John Standeford, RB J.T. Wall, terminated the contract of OT Marcus Spears, signed DT Corey Simon, Placed on Reserve/Non-Football Injury (NFL Europe) DB Daryl Dixon, K Stephen Scaldaferri, DE Javor Mills, Placed on Reserve/Suspended DB Mike Doss, Placed on Injured Reserve OT-Makoa Freitas, WR Brad Pyatt, Placed on Reserve/PUP, DB Von Hutchins, Obtained in trade LB Rocky Calmus from Tennessee for an undisclosed draft pick.
Analysis: Arth was a minor surprise but look for him to go to the practice squad. The team will carry two quarterbacks for the time being. With Hutton, Spears, and Newton let go, the team is thin on depth with much experience on the offensive line.
Moves: Released running backs David Allen, Chris Fuamatu-Ma'afala and Rich Alexis, cornerbacks Kiwaukee Thomas and Chris Thompson, linebackers Jimmy McClain and Nate Wayne, defensive tackles Martin Chase and Tony Williams, guards Derrick Fletcher and Joe Tate, center Brett Romberg, defensive ends Jim Davis, Omari Hand and Benard Thomas, wide receiver Kelvin Kight and tight end Mark Wood; placed tight end Tdod Yoder on injured reserve.
Analysis: Thomas had been for the team for many years but there was a logjam at cornerback and he was the odd man out along with Thompson. Chase and Williams were small surprises leaving the team with Rob Meier and second-year pro Anthony Maddox as the backups at defensive tackle. Wayne's career has taken a tumble and has now been cut by the Eagles and Jaguars in the past two seasons.
Moves: Waived OT Ben Herrell, OT Brent Swaggert, LB Brian Atkinson, LB Robert Rodriguez, FB Jimmy Dixon, WR O.J. Small, DE Kenny Smith, DE Derrick Strong and TE Ben Hall, QB Chris Redman, S Norman LeJeune, S Arturo Freeman, RB Larry Croom, S Marcus Randall, S Marcus White, FB Robert Douglas and RB Jarrett Payton. Waived S Sam Massey and RB Joe Smith from the NFL Europe League injured list.
Analysis: Freeman has bounced around over the past year. Redman was vying for the No.3 job it seemed but for the time being, the team is carrying just two quarterbacks. Rookie RB Damien Nash who has more speed beat out Payton.
Moves: DE Chukie Nwokorie waived/injured. G Tyson Clabo, T Anthony Clement, CB Curome Cox, DT Dorsett Davis, DT Mario Fatafehi, RB Quentin Griffin, DE Aaron Hunt, Jeremy LeSueur, WR Triandos Luke, QB Matt Mauck, RB Brandon Miree, OL Chris Myers, C Ben Nowland, DE Anton Palepoi, T Erik Pears, LB Terry Pierce, LB Jashon Sykes, G Chris Watton, Zach Wilson.
Analysis: Fatafehi got caught up in a numbers game at the position. Griffin was one of the biggest surprises of the day. They kept veteran RB Ron Dayne over him. They'll use second-year RB Tatum Bell when they're looking for a change of pace. Griffin could find his way to the practice squad. WR Charlie Adams beat out Luke for the No.5 job. Mauck's release leaves the team with just two quarterbacks.
Kansas City Chiefs
Moves: Released WR Freddie Mitchell and G Aaron Johnson, CB Ashley Ambrose, T Thomas Barnett, WR John Booth, RB Dee Brown, S Scott Connot, DT Arrion Dixon, CB Alphonso Hodge, QB James Kilian, WR Jeris McIntyre, DE Clint Mitchell, QB Jonathan Quinn, DT Montique Sharpe, RB McKenzi Smith, TE Edwin Thompson, WR Craphonso Thorpe, DE Zach Ville. Signed OT Thomas Barnett to a two-year contract. Suspended offensive lineman John Welbourn four games for violating the league's substance abuse policy.
Analysis: Mitchell (knee), because he's still not ready, was let go. Ronnie Cruz beat out Brown for the No.3 running back job. Thorpe should go to the practice squad. Ambrose lost out to veteran CB Dewayne Washington.
Moves: WR James Adkisson, WR Cedric Bonner, S Calvin Branch, G C.J. Brooks, C Vince Carter, TE Rickey Dudley, LB Jay Foreman, LB Akbar Gbaja-Biamila, RB DeJuan Green, DT Anttaj Hawthorne, FB Chris Hetherington, DE Jordan Hicks, TE Teyo Johnson, OT Brad Lekkerkkerker, DT Lorn Mayers, FB J.R. Nicklos, S Marquis Smith, QB Bret Engemann, LB Edward Thomas
Analysis: The two surprises were Foreman, who we noted weeks ago that he was a deep backup for them. He became expendable due to the development of rookie LB Kirk Morrison. The other was Johnson who clearly was never out of the doghouse from last year. Journeyman TE Zeron Flemister will back up second-year TE Courtney Anderson. Hawthorne didn't wow anyone in camp. My how his star has fallen.
San Diego Chargers
Moves: Released linebackers Phil Archer and Robby Farmer, defensive tackles Ryon Bingham and Jemelle Cage, tackles Wesley Britt and Cory Lekkerkerker, safety Robb Butler, wide receivers Greg Camarillo, Malcom Floyd, Ruvell Martin and Carl Morris, cornerbacks Jonathan Cox, Markus Curry and Gabe Franklin, running backs Ahmaad Galloway and Ray Perkins, defensive end Robert Pollard, tight end Duncan Reid and Danny Young, center Isaiah Ross and guard Wes Sims.
Analysis: Britt and Sims were second day picks so their releases were minor surprises though they could wind up on the practice squad. Butler was a minor surprise but they have depth at safety.
