Scouting C-USA: Southern Mississippi
A college quarterback we've liked for three years, Dustin Almond is an intelligent and accurate passer in the short field. Effectively reading defenses, Almond remains poised as the pocket collapses around him, buying time for receivers. Going through wide out progressions, he possesses excellent timing and hits receivers as they leave their breaks. Powering the ball between the numbers, Almond throws some beautiful passes yet lacks the big arm and must significantly improve his downfield accuracy. He does not offer great potential but could be a solid third quarterback at the next level. Receiver Antwon Courington is a pass catcher effective running after the reception and could move into the draft's late rounds with a good senior campaign. Junior guard Travis Cooley is a solid prospect for the future.
Defensively a pair of players are worth watching in the back seven. Linebacker Trevis Coley is a good athlete who takes good angles to the play then quickly fills gaps in run defense, Solid in pursuit, he possesses a good burst of closing speed and flashes on the scene. Undersized, Coley plays more of a rover\safety position and his ultimate NFL position could be strong safety. Cornerback John Eubanks is an explosive cover man who easily runs downfield with opponents then positions himself to make a play on the ball. Possessing excellent closing and recovery speed, he is also effective returning punts. Not greatly instinctive, Eubanks is slow locating the pass in the air and hesitates picking up assignments. He has potential as a dime back at the next level.
