'06 NFL Draft Watch: UAB

The Blazers come off a season in which they made a bowl appearance then had a player selected in the first round of the NFL Draft. They hope to repeat their post-season performance in ‘05 but realize putting another player in the top 32 selections next April is a very lofty goal which is unlikely to happen.

Scouting C-USA:  Alabama Birmingham

Quarterback Darrell Hackney is a terrific athlete with an NFL arm and a prospect who can jump up draft boards if he puts together a solid season. Not afraid to challenge the vertical game, Hackney easily gets the ball downfield, putting deep passes in front of targets. Needing to improve his fundamentals, Hackney has the physical skills to be a top 60 selection yet must perform well in All Star games as well as the combine besides showing consistency this season. Receiver Reggie Lindsey now becomes Hackney's number one target. An efficient pass catcher who also effects the game as a return specialist, Lindsey possesses marginal size\speed numbers. Tight end Cedric Hampton has excellent size and could make it as a short-yardage blocker in the NFL.

The defensive talent is not overwhelming though there are a pair of players to watch on the line. Tackle Sam Williamson is a leverage lineman on the inside who quickly diagnoses the action. Making plays in most directions of the field, Williamson is neither explosive nor strong yet offers growth potential for the next level. Junior Jermaine McElveen is a solid athlete who makes plays laterally or up the field. Lacking top first step quickness off the snap, he must improve his overall body strength to get serious consideration in 2007.
