'06 NFL Draft Watch: San Jose State

San Jose State is under new management as former Arizona coach Dick Tomey takes over the program. Consistently struggling on the football field, the team offers a few marginal pro-prospects.

Scouting the WAC:  San Jose State

On offense a trio of pass catchers must be watched. Receiver Rufus Skillern is a natural wide out with excellent eye\hand coordination and outstanding focus. Nicely timing receptions, he makes the catch downfield with defenders draped on him. John Broussard is a slim yet explosive receiver with the speed to stretch defenses. Adjusting nicely to the errant throw, he is also effective returning kicks but must turn up the production as a senior to get serious draft consideration. Tight end Byran Watje is an adequate blocker who must become more involved in the offense.

On defense safety Josh Powell has been a productive player the past three years. An alert defensive back with a good head for the ball, he is quick to diagnose the action and goes hard until the whistle blows. Displaying good instincts in coverage, Powell is a flashy defender yet lacks sideline-to-sideline range and would be best off in a zone system.
