Jakes went wild on Sunday and top our fantasy QB list. Denver's Jake Plummer threw four TDs and 300+ yards in a victory over the Eagles. Jake Delhomme also had a top performance in week eight with a 342 yard - 3 TD game over the sinking Vikings. San Diego quarterback Drew Brees is moving steadily into the fantasy elite with another week of monster stats (3 TDs to TE Antonio Gates). Philly's come from behind performance led by Donovan McNabb (who didn't look sharp in the game with only 12 completions) eventually stalled out against a solid Bronco defense, but McNabb's three touchdown passes were enough to satisfy his fantasy owners. Kerry Collins and Carson Palmer had nearly identical numbers with 230+ passing yards and three TDs each in wins over Tennessee and Green Bay. Trent Green's 347 passing yards and a couple scores in a loss against the Chargers was performed with a heavy heart upon Green learning of his father's death earlier in the week.
Like the quarterbacks this week, we play the name game again for our top two fanstasy RB spots...this time it's guys with the last name Barber. Tiki Barber and the Giants played with heavy hearts upon the death of the N.Y. Giants' owner Wellington Mara last Tuesday...Tiki was a Giant leader with 200+ rushing yards as the whole team dedicated their efforts to Mara and crushed the Redskins in a 36-0 shutout. Backing up Julius Jones, Marion Barber rushed for 127 and two TDs against the Cardinals. Steven Jackson may be benefiting from the change in coaching philosophies...Jackson ran 25 of the Rams' 33 rushing attempts and had 200 total yards to lead the Rams in a win against a tough Jacksonville defense. Denver's version of "Thunder & Lightning" (Mike Anderson and Tatum Bell) combined for a staggering 233 rushing yards and three TDs to defeat the Philadelphia Eagles in Denver. Fred Taylor recovered nicely for 165 rushing yards and a score in a game against St. Louis that featured the run for both teams. Raiders' RB LaMont Jordan split his 136 total yards evenly between the run and pass to help defeat the Tennessee Titans. Corey Dillon and Stephen Davis had few total yards, but made their fantasy owners happy with two TDs apiece. Chris Brown and Brian Westbrook both put up 100+ yard efforts and a score, but were not enough for the Titans and the Eagles. Chris Brown returned for the Titans with a strong 100 yard peformance against the Raiders. Willis McGahee, Kevan Barlow, Ronnie Brown, and Domanick Davis all rumbled for nice yardage, but none were able to find the endzone. LaDainian Tomlinson and Kevin Jones had decent yards and a score, but Tomlinson found the 'zone with the pass....completing his third TD pass this season.
After last week's minimal fantasy numbers from wide receivers (Donald Driver topped our list with 114 yards and one score), week eight yielded a bounty of fantasy WR production. Topping our list of fantasy wide receiving stars is Steve Smith and his 11 catch 201 yard performance against the Vikings...and oh yeah, he had a TD. Jerry Porter filled in nicely for a banged up Randy Moss for 123 yards and a couple of scores. Keeping with the trend that effective running wins in the NFL,...Terrell Owens, Joey Galloway, Ernest Wilford, Eric Moulds, and Eddie Kennison all had huge receiving games with TDs for their respecive teams, but neither the Eagles, Bucs, Jags, Bills, or Chiefs was able to win with the efforts. Kevin Curtis and Deion Branch both had near 100 yard receiving games and scores to help the Rams and Pats win. Courtney Roby, T.J. Houshmandzadeh, Marcus Robinson, Rod Smith, and Anquan Boldin may not be the top receivers on their teams, but each had nice yardage and a score for fantasy owners who dared start them in their line-ups. Joe Horn returned to the Saints' line-up and caught seven balls for 99 yards. The name game continues with a couple of Antonio's to wrap our top wide receiver list...Antonio Bryant and Antonio Chatman each had nearly 100 receiving yards, but neither found the goal-line.
Again, Antonio Gates is the best tight end in fantasy football. In a head-to-head match-up with nemesis Tony Gonzalez, Gates caught 10 balls for 145 yards and three TDs (wow!). Tony Gonzalez demanded the ball in his match-up with Gates, but his seven catches for 97 yards and a TD were not enough to take the top fantasy TE. Pittsburgh's Heath Miller decided he couldn't be left out, and came through for the Steelers with two scores on Monday Night Football...and for fantasy owners needing something from their TE on MNF, he made their night. Bubba Franks and Jeremy Shockey both found the endzone. Jason Witten, Erron Kinney, and Michael Gaines caught balls for nearly 70 yards apiece, but none of three scored.
News and Notes - Wellington Mara, owner of the New York Giants, passed away last Tuesday at 89...A respected "friend" of the Giant players, that liked to shake hands with the players when they came off the field, was an owner with integrity and dignity and did what was right and fair with the league - he will be missed by the Giants and all who knew him...LaDainian Tomlinson passed for his third touchdown this season...The previously winless Houston Texans rallyed to defeat the Browns in Houston...Week 8 was the week of the kicker - Fantasy owners with Jay Feely or Joe Nedney (5 FGs each) -OR- Kris Brown, Olindo Mare, or Matt Stover (4 FGs each) may have won their fantasy games with the boot...The New York Giants shut the Washington Redskins out 36-0 and limited Mark Brunell to a mere 65 yards passing (this after Brunell threw for three TDs the past two weekends and threw for two or more TDs in every start this year)...Daunte Culpepper is done for the season after suffering a severe knee injury in the first quarter against the Panthers...Upon being the NFL's leading quarterback with 14 TDs through week seven (and a passer rating of 93.1), Brett Favre threw for five interceptions against the Cincinnati Bengals
