Reviewing the draft: Philadelphia Eagles

Struggling through a disspointing season last year, the Eagles were in the unsual position of owning the middle selection of every round. There were needs on the lines of scrimmage and Philadelphia was aggressive filling them.

Philadelphia Eagles

The Eagles came into the draft with definite needs on both lines of scrimmage and left the weekend filling most of them. Brodrick Bunkley is similar to Mike Patterson, last year's first round choice, in that he's explosive, quick yet undersized. The Eagles will have an intense, yet small, starting pair on the inside of their defensive line. Winston Justice physically compares to just about any offensive linemen available in this draft. His versatility to play either tackle spot is also attractive. His immaturity and character issues are worrisome. Yet the fact he'll be learning behind a veteran and practicing with an accomplished offensive line made this a good pick for both team and player. The same can be said for Max Jean-Gilles, who dropped because of weight concerns. Jean-Gilles could find a starting spot at guard if he commits to off-season conditioning. Chris Gocong was a mild reach in our opinion yet his playing style and body type fit the Eagles scheme, who'll use him as a rush linebacker. Jason Avant is another good fit as the big-bodied wide out and will be a solid red-zone target for the team. Omar Gaither could make the roster as a fifth linebacker.  Jeremy Bloom was a reach in round five but should make for some good conversation.

Philadelphia gave away a fourth round choice in order to move up six spots in round two and select Justice. Considering the awesome upside potential of the big tackle it was well worth it. They then gave away a pick in the middle of round seven to slide up five slots in the third and select Gocong; again, little risk involved there. Hollis Thomas was expendable after the selection of Bunkley and helped the team move into a position to select Jean-Gillis. Again, considering the guard's upside it was worth taking the risk.
