NFL Draft '07: Scouting Clemson

After a hot start last season the Tigers lost a heartbreaking game to Miami yet finished the year strong. The team has only a few players that will be selected in the 2007 draft though one stands above the rest.

A pair of offense linemen will get consideration in the late rounds as will Clemson's top receiver.  Dustin Fry is a hard working center and a nasty blocker on the pivot.  Explosive, Fry does a great job quarterbacking the line but does not possess great upside potential.  Right tackle Marion Dukes is another solid short area blocker likely to be pushed inside to guard at the next level.  Senior Chansi Stuckey shows game breaking speed as a receiver or returning punts.  Effective running after the reception, he has a quick burst and stretches defenses deep.  Stuckey is not physical has a tendency to finish plays running out of bounds and also drops a lot of easy receptions.  Running back Reggie Merriweather will see his number of carries shrink significantly this season due to sophomore sensation James Davis.  A quick ball carrier with the footwork necessary to bounce around piles, Meriweather will receive free agent consideration next April.  Tight end Thomas Hunter is a solid pass catcher who makes the difficult reception between defenders.  A marginal blocker, he projects to an H-back position in the NFL.

Defensive end Gaines Adams is one of the most disruptive pass rushers in the nation and a prospect who will get consideration in the top half of round one next year.  A terrific athlete who plays with great balance, body control and speed, Adams makes plays in any direction on the field.  Forceful, opposing tackles have difficulty adjusting to his speed.  Occasionally stood up over tackle, Adams lacks top  playing strength and may get consideration at outside linebacker in a 34 defense.  Linebacker Anthony Waters is another athletic defender who plays with a good degree of explosion from sideline to sideline.  Effectively picking up cover assignments, Waters has the size to get late round consideration if not earlier based on the upcoming season.  A former running back, Duane Coleman took over the duties at cornerback late last season and must be watched.  C. J. Gaddis is another prospect in the secondary and a junior who offers terrific upside.
