NFL Draft '07: Scouting Arizona

A program on the rise, Arizona hopes to improve from a three win season a year ago. As expected the top NFL prospects are found in the defensive secondary, a specialty of head coach Mike Stoops.

Offensively junior receiver Anthony Johnson is a nice sized sure handed wide out who makes the difficult catch. Offering a lot of upside potential, expect a breakout campaign from Johnson in ‘06. Undersized but elusive, receiver Syndric Steptoe makes things happen as a pass catcher and return specialist. Ever improving at receiver, he is a late round pick next September whose value lay on special teams. Offensive tackle Tanner Bell is a huge lineman and a size prospect who must complete his game.

A trio of players in the secondary will be top sixty selections in the next two NFL draft's. Antoine Cason is a shutdown cornerback with excellent size. A terrific athlete, Cason stands out in man-to-man coverage situations and has first round abilities. Safety Michael Johnson moved into the starting lineup late last season and is a prospect with terrific upside potential. Offering great size Johnson is a hard-hitting defensive back who also displays excellent ball skills. Wilrey Fontenot is a developing corner closely monitored by NFL scouts. After showing flashes of ability in 2004 defensive end Marcus Smith missed all but two games last season with injury. A well-sized lineman that can be used in a two-gap system, a good senior campaign could throw Smith into the late part of the draft's late rounds.
