NFL Draft '07: Scouting Alabama

After a strong start to the 2005 campaign the Tide fizzled down the stretch of the regular season. They must replace top players from both sides of the ball yet do bring back several good NFL prospects.

Running back Kenneth Darby will be the focal point of opposing defenses as well as NFL scouts this season. A nice sized ball carrier Darby combines intelligence, instincts and strength. Best between tackle Darby is also effective catching the ball out of the backfield. While he times well in the forty he does not consistently beat defenders around the corner nor run to daylight. A good senior campaign will solidify him as a top sixty choice next April. Alabama offers a pair of fullback prospects with contrasting styles. Le'Ron McClain is a strong lead blocker who aggressively attacks assignments and turns defenders off the ball. Also a solid receiver out of the backfield, McClain will get late round consideration. Tim Castille is a little more athletic and more of an offensive threat, though his blocking needs improvement. Junior D. J. Hall is an outstanding receiver prospect with nice size and game breaking speed. Offensive tackle Kyle Tatum is a solid prospect on the right side. Making excellent use of blocking angles Tatum is fundamentally sound and plays with a nasty attitude. Possessing marginal footwork, he lacks overall blocking range but offers size as well as growth potential. He will be a solid middle round choice next April.

Presently all of Alabama's defensive prospects sit as second day picks. Tackle Jeremy Clark is a tenacious player up front with great intensity. Quick off the snap, Clark keeps driving up the field and consistently makes plays. Lacking classic size for the interior, Clark is handled at the point by opponents and needs to improve his playing strength and hand technique. Outside linebacker Juwan Simpson is a solid athlete who covers a lot of area on the field. Quickly recognizing assignments in coverage Simpson stays with running backs or tight ends down the field and also displays explosion in run defense. A bit undersized, he offers potential for the weak side. Cornerback Ramzee Robinson is a quick-footed cover man who lacks true top end speed. Best facing the quarterback, he has possibilities as a dime corner in a zone system. Junior Simeon Castille is another defensive back effective in zone coverage and a prospect who flashes skill.
