Scout Sightings: Weekend of 10/14

Scouts from a half dozen NFL teams took in the Mountain West contest between Wyoming and Utah last week as well as the SEC face-off between Mississippi and Alabama. Here are the players each franchise was targeting.

Wyoming - Utah 10/14:

The highlight was Wyoming defensive back John Wendling whose come on strong and has scouts buzzing about his play recently.   Both the Panthers and Falcons, who have needs at the safety spot, like Wendling.

Wyoming tackle Chase Johnson is a blocker who'll get late round consideration by the Falcons, a team in need of offensive linemen.  They would also be interested in a third Cowboy, defensive end Aaron Robbins.  Slow returning from the knee injury which shelved him last year, Robbins still displays the ability to make plays rushing the passer.  Robbins is a free agent who could add inexpensive depth to the Atlanta roster.

Carolina and Atlanta were not impressed with the play of Eric Weddle, Utah's highly rated defensive back presently slipping down draft boards.

With the need to add depth at the defensive tackle position the Vikings would have an eye on Kelly Talavou.  Explosive and strong on the inside, Talavou is a pocket pusher best suited as a rotational lineman.  He has a late round grade.

Another player they'd like, and one moving up draft boards, is Paul Soliai, who plays the nose guard position.  Not even ranked coming into the season, Soliai is getting consideration in the late rounds based on his performance this season.

Alabama-Ole Miss 10/14:

The 49ers were on hand to specifically scout Alabama running back Kenneth Darby, fullback Le'Ron McClain and 'Ole Miss linebacker Patrick Willis.  With the need at wide out Bama's big play junior D. J. Hall would also be of interest to them should he decide to enter the draft.

The Jaguars, in needs of a few front seven players on defense, like Juwan Simpson of Alabama.  Our sources in the organization also told us they have targeted Willis as a first round possibility.

With the Eagles looking for depth at offensive tackle Kyle Tatum would be of interest to the franchise.  A late round pick, he is the type of player the organization has had success with in the past.  Finally, count Philadelphia as another team interested in acquiring the services of Willis in round one, depending on where they select.
