A full complement of coaches and general managers were on hand at Wednesday's morning practice, the most important one for the North of this week. Lots of coaching news and player tryouts to report.
We can confirm now that the New York Jets are interested in Tampa Bay Buccaneers running backs coach Art Valero as their replacement for the departed Sam Gash. Yesterday Mike Tannenbaum and Terry Bradway spoke with the Bucs' Bob Casullo about Valero and are expected to ask the team for permission to interview Valero.
Former Oakland Raider Kenny Smith, who did not play last year, was on hand interviewing with teams yesterday. Smith, the one-time Alabama star, has workouts set up with the Dolphins and Buccaneers in the coming week.
According to a team source, it's highly unlikely that the Atlanta Falcons would trade for Oakland Raiders WR Randy Moss. According to the source, team owner Arthur Blank looks for high-character players and Moss wouldn't fit into that mold. The source adds that the team had no interest in controversial WR Terrell Owens when he was released by the Philadelphia Eagles last year.
The Cleveland Browns interviewed former Arizona Cardinals offensive line coach Steve Loney and former Carolina Panthers offensive line coach Mike Maser on Wednesday. According to a league source, Loney is the favorite of many to get the job.
