Scouting the MAC: Akron

The former school of Gerry Faust, best known for the occasional upstart victory and an equal amount of pro-prospects including Victor Green will have only minimal impact in next April's draft.

Akron Zips

Running back Brandon Payne is a tough, hard working interior runner that easily handles the load carrying the ball on a smaller I-A level as well as being a very productive receiver out of the backfield that makes the big reception down field. Though he displays good vision carrying the ball Payne is not an elusive or quick back that makes defenders miss or shows a lot of "avoidability" to his running. Factor in the major knee injury Payne suffered at the end of '01 and it will be an uphill battle for him. He's a free agent that must make it on special teams but will only be signed if he knee totally checks out..

Defensively Ron Myers is a quick and relentless outside linebacker that may just lack the pure size speed numbers for the next level, something Dwayne LeFall may not have to worry about. A defensive end that causes a lot of havoc in the opponent's backfield, LeFall was a terrific pass rusher as a freshman but was forced to sit out last season.  He returns this year and should he build upon the skills displayed in 2000 he is a future prospect to keep an eye on.
