Buffalo and Philadelphia Make a Deal

The Eagles have sent DT Darwin Walker and a 2008 conditional seventh-round pick to the Bills for LB Takeo Spikes and QB Kelly Holcomb. The deal is contingent on all players passing physicals.

Phoenix, AZ--

Walker signed a seven-year contract extension back in 2002 worth over $11 million with a $4 million signing bonus. He was originally drafted by the Arizona Cardinals in the third round of the 2000 draft but was waived after one game during the regular season and then was claimed by Philadelphia.

Walker won a starting job during training camp in 2002 and was a starter ever since. However, his play dropped off in 2006--so much so that the team signed veteran DT Montae Reagor to replace him.
Reagor, 2006 first-round pick Brodrick Bunkley, and 2005 first-round pick Mike Patterson will make up the top of the rotation at the position. Bunkley's performance last season was a disappointment for the team and he got off to a slow start after missing all of training camp. The team is also very high on second-year DT LaJuan Ramsey who should be part of the rotation this season.

Spikes was once one of the better outside linebackers in the NFL and only missed one game in his first seven seasons. However, he missed the final 13 games of the 2005 due to a torn Achilles and he missed four games last season due to injury. Spikes is likely to play at SLB, where the struggling Dhani Jones currently resides. Jones could be on his way out because the team wants to get a good look at second-year OLB Chris Gocong, who missed all of his rookie season due to a neck injury.

Holcomb will take over the third spot on the depth chart at quarterback for the Eagles.

As an interesting aside, scout.com has learned Buffalo has a pre-draft visit coming up with Louisville DT Amobi Okoye. It's not known yet whether the acquisition of Walker will result in the team canceling Okoye's visit.
