NFL Fantasy Matchups - Week 2

Bring on NFL Fantasy Football Week 2! Check here each Thursday for game-by-game fantasy analysis. We give fantasy owners the edge heading into each week of the NFL fantasy season.

Indianapolis Colts (1-0) @ Tennessee Titans (1-0) 1:00 CBS
The Colts last week looked like world-beaters on both sides of the ball. If you are fortunate enough to have any Colt studs on your roster, then play them all against the Titans...including Peyton Manning, Joseph Addai, Marvin Harrison, Reggie Wayne, Dallas Clark, and Adam Vinatieri. For Tennessee on offense, I believe they may perform a little better than the Saints played last week in Indy. QB Vince Young will do okay, but mostly due to his ability to bust out a big play or two with his breakaway runs when flushed out of the pocket. RB Chris Brown went off with 175 yards against the Jags and could have another nice game against the Colts, but don't expect too much from Brown since Indy will likely be ahead early in this game and force Tennessee to abandon the run.

Green Bay Packers (1-0) @ New York Giants (0-1) 1:00 FOX
The Pack didn't look that impressive against the Eagles last week...the only thing impressive in their 2007 home debut was that they won the game late. On the other hand, the Giants stopped nothing on defense against Dallas and gave up 478 yards with 45 points. Go with RB Brandon Jackson and the Brett Favre to Donald Driver connection given the Giants poor defense last week. In addition to the problems on defense, the Giants are especially beat-up on offense and will likely be without QB Eli Manning. Consider playing Derrick Ward at RB (in for injured Brandon Jacobs) if you can get him off the waiver wire, but he's certainly not a top RB pick this week. WR Plaxico Burress and TE Jeremy Shockey are just too good to bench, but are both risky plays this week with Manning ailing on the sidelines.

Cincinnati Bengals (1-0) @ Cleveland Browns (0-1) 1:00 CBS
Cleveland always seems to give the Bengals a tough game, but I think you have to go with your Bengal studs in this one. Play QB Carson Palmer, RB Rudi Johnson, and WRs Chad Johnson / T.J. Houshmandzadeh with confidence this week. For the Browns on offense...well...they're still learning how to get things rolling and still trying to figure out their quarterback situation. After sending week 1 starter Charlie Frye packing to Seattle this week, the Pound wants rookie Brady Quinn in the game sooner rather than later. Even if Quinn starts, he's an ill-advised fantasy play. Braylon Edwards is talented...as is TE Kellen Winslow...but any fantasy starter for Clevland on offense is a wild card until things get a bit sorted out. Quinn showed poise and maturity in college under coach Charlie Weiss and I believe he has the goods to be a strong NFL quarterback, but he's just not ready at this level...at least not yet.

Houston Texans (1-0) @ Carolina Panthers (1-0) 1:00 CBS
After a horrible start last season while Texan fans watched a horizontal David Carr on most plays, Matt Schaub has opened 2007 with much needed hope bestowed upon the Houston faithful. Andre Johnson caught 103 passes (albeit only 5 TDs) in 2006 against double and triple teaming, but the ability shown by Schaub is already presenting AJ with better opportunities this year (Johnson finished week 1 with 142 receiving yards and a TD). Play Andre against the Panthers and continue to watch the situation develop in Houston prior to starting other Texans in your fantasy lineups. Schaub has a much tougher matchup this week, so keep him benched for now and watch how he performs against Carolina before starting him in upcoming weeks. For the Panthers, QB Jake Delhomme proved he's still a player in the NFL. Delhomme threw for 3 TDs last week and found WR Steve Smith for 118 yards and one of those scores. Smith is a must this week against Houston. Delhomme probably still isn't a top 10 fantasy QB, but he has a decent matchup this week at home. The RB situation continues to be dicey for the Panthers and isn't a good fantasy situation. DeShaun Foster and DeAngelo Williams will again split carries and need to be avoided until a frontrunner takes hold of the position.

Could the defending top 2006 offense have looked any worse last week against the Colts? Drew Brees, Marques Colston, and Reggie Bush are all tier one players, but they looked like boys against men on TNF. Fortunately for the Saints, they play the Bucs this weekend and should have a better go of things. Play Brees, Colston, and Bush (& even RB Deuce McAllister / WR Devery Henderson) at Tampa while trying to pretend last week didn't happen. Buccaneers RB Cadillac Williams started off looking like he did his rookie season...that is until he got smoked in the ribs (forcing him out of last weeks game and likely to miss this game). Caddy probably would have been the only recommended fantasy play this week for the Bucs had he been healthy, but I don't think you start any of the Orange & Pewter with Williams on the bench.

Buffalo Bills (0-1) @ Pittsburgh Steelers (1-0) 1:00 CBS
Buffalo didn't deserve to lose to the Broncos at home last week, but a late drive and last second field goal gave Denver a one-point win. QB J.P. Losman was decent and rookie RB Marshawn Lynch was an absolute force out of the backfield. In fact, I believe you continue to play Lynch until further notice (even though he faces a very tough Steeler run defense this week)...but Losman is still no more than an average play against Pittsburgh and should be benched if better alternatives. WR Lee Evans didn't set the world on fire in week 1, but is too good to leave out of your starting lineup. For Pittsburgh, QB Ben Roethlisberger didn't have huge passing totals last week except for one area - touchdowns. Big Ben threw 4 TDs against the Browns and is a "get 'er done" type of QB who should have another solid game this week. Fast Willie Parker is a must start every week and will have another game of 100+ all-purpose yards with a score. I also like possession receiver Hines Ward in this game.

Atlanta Falcons (0-1) @ Jacksonville Jaguars (0-1) 1:00 FOX
Forget playing any Falcons...at least until a QB (Joey Harrington for now) and possibly RB Jerious Norwood show they can produce from week to week. For the Jags, similar reasoning applies. Oh, I'm sure one of these teams will put up some points and Maurice-Jones Drew with a combination of QB David Garrard may get it done for Jax. But neither of these teams are a fantasy mecca and certainly not worthy of much fantasy consideration at this point.

San Francisco 49ers (1-0) @ St. Louis Rams (0-1) 1:00 FOX
Suprisingly, the Niner offense looked awful against a lousy Cardinals defense on MNF. We'll chalk this one up to game one jitters. Consider Alex Smith as an average fantasy QB against the Rams this week. RB Frank Gore is a must start. WR Darrell Jackson has to prove he can hold on to the ball before he gets back in fantasy lineups. And I really want to believe TE Vernon Davis when he spouts how good he is, but he needs to show us in the game...maybe he'll put it together this week against the Rams. For St. Louis, the season ending loss to Orlando Pace hurts...it hurts really badly. But, for now, stick with QB Marc Bulger, RB Steven Jackson, and WR Torry Holt. I believe this trio could play behind a high school offensive line and still produce (and they may have to this week with several starters injured)...even if SF's defense has improved greatly.

Minnesota Vikings (1-0) @ Detroit Lions (1-0) 4:05 FOX
Let's call this game "Adrian Peterson vs. Calvin Johnson" since that's who 90% of the viewing audience will want to see. But there will be more than these two SuperRookies in this one....well....at least for the Lions. Play Peterson for Minnesota and believe his 163 yards last week weren't a lucky first game fluke. He gets another wonderful matchup this week with a Lions D that gave up huge yardage to Oakland last week. For the Lions, start QB Jon Kitna (I think I could even be a fantasy star with his WRs) with WR superstars Roy Williams / Calvin Johnson. Consider keeping RB Tatum Bell on your bench and away from the tough Vikings run defense.

Seattle Seahawks (1-0) @ Arizona Cardinals (0-1) 4:05 FOX
Shaun Alexander feels like it's 2005 and played last week without any pain in his previously broken foot. He is a huge play this week against the Cardinals. I also like QB Matt Hasselbeck with WR Deion Branch in a game where the Seahawks should score early and often. For Arizona, they looked miserable last week against the Niners. Consider Matt Leinart an average fantasy QB start here with WRs Larry Fitzgerald / Anquan Boldin. RB Edgerrin James was the lone bright spot for the Cards last week and looked as good as he has in a Cardinals uniform...mostly due to Ken Whisenhunt's new offense and focus upon the running game. Edge is a solid play against Seattle in week two.

Dallas Cowboys (1-0) @ Miami Dolphins (0-1) 4:05 FOX
Tony Romo should be able to pick apart the Miami secondary with several strikes to WR Terrell Owens and TE Jason Witten. But cautiously consider RBs Julius Jones and Marion Barber against the solid run D of Miami (even though the Skins put up 191 rushing yards last week). Bottom line is that Dallas is a good team (check last week's stats for confirmation) heading in the right direction and Miami will continue to struggle in '07...so expect some solid points this week for the Cowboy fantasy players. For the Dolphins, consider starting RB Ronnie Brown or WR Chris Chambers. Both of whom may do okay for the Fins since Miami will be receiving many, many kickoffs in this game in an opportunity to get things going on offense. Even though Miami QB Trent Green is facing a Dallas secondary that gave up the house to the Giants in week 1, Green needs to prove he can still play in the NFL before moving him onto a fantasy roster.

Kansas City Chiefs (0-1) @ Chicago Bears (0-1) 4:15 CBS
Larry Johnson should be in your lineup if on your roster, but it may not be pretty this week against a Bears D that held LaDainian Tomlinson to 25 yards on 17 carries last week. And...maybe you play Tony Gonzalez if your league requires a tight end and he's the only one on your team, but that's about it for the Chiefs. For the Bears, they need a different quarterback. But,...this may actually be one of those games that Rex Grossman gets some decent numbers. Believe it or not, I think he's a decent start this week. Bernard Berrian is a favorite target of Rex and will get the bulk of his passes thrown his direction...and is a must start in this game. Cedric Benson is under some heat in Chicago and needs to produce. I believe he will against KC, but Benson cetainly has no lock on the long-term starting position unless he shows something soon (esp. w/ Adrian Peterson breathing behind him on the bench). Rookie TE Greg Olsen is extremely talented, but still a bit banged up. Either Desmond Clard or Olsen will do well here, but be sure to check the injury report closer to gametime to verify which TE will get the bulk of the action. As of now, Olsen is 50/50 to get his first NFL start against the Chiefs.

New York Jets (0-1) @ Baltimore Ravens (0-1) 4:15 CBS
The Jets lost last weekend...I mean they got beat badly by a strong Patriots team. The only saving grace for Jets fans was the deflection from the game to the focus on the Pats signal-stealing scandal. Regardless, the Jets didn't have much for New England and now have a banged up quarterback against a tough Baltimore defense. RB Thomas Jones is still dinged and I believe you sit him here. WRs Laveranues Coles and Jerricho Cotchery are okay, but wait for better game matchups if you can afford to do so. For the Ravens, Willis McGahee and Todd Heap are the only decent plays...although Derrick Mason is worth considering if in a total pinch.

Oakland Raiders (0-1) @ Denver Broncos (1-0) 4:15 CBS
The Raiders had a nice showing last week at home against Detroit and have some of the Silver & Black hoping for a decent season. Underachiever LaMont Jordan put up some surprising numbers last week and may be finally starting to find a groove (of course it could have been the weak Lion defensive front that help him along). Jordan is an average play this week despite last week's performance. WR Ronald Curry is good receiver on a below average Raiders team, but who knows who will be delivering the ball with a banged up Josh McCown and Daunte Culpepper waiting in the wings. Regardless, Curry won't have the success this week against Denver's top corners. For the Broncs, play RB Travis Henry after a nice performance last weekend. WR Javon Walker is one of the top talents in the league, but may have his hands full with a solid Raider secondary. I think you play Walker here, but consider benching QB Jay Cutler if you have other alternatives.

San Diego Chargers (1-0) @ New England Patriots (1-0) SNF 8:15 NBC
This week's key game features 2 of the 3 top teams in the AFC squaring off against one another...and the Chargers don't care much for the Pats after last year's post game fiasco. But regardless of last year's game or this year's signal stealing cheating scandal by New England, I believe the Patriots win this game by much more than a field goal...the Pats are just that good! Obviously, play QB Tom Brady and WR Randy Moss here (still can't believe they're on the same team...nor can I believe that anyone ever doubted Moss' potential in NE). In addition to the Brady-Moss combo, play RB Laurence Maroney and WR Donte Stallworth every week until proven otherwise. For the Chargers, QB Philip Rivers is no more than an average fantasy play against a solid Patriot D at home. Two must fantasy plays for San Diego are LaDainian Tomlinson and TE Antonio Gates...and each are must starts regardless of the opponent.

Washington Redskins (1-0) @ Philadelphia Eagles (0-1) MNF 8:30 ESPN
The Redskins got away with a win last weekend, but it wasn't like they put on a great show. Play Clinton Portis if you have him, but the rest of the Skins are only average plays (including WR Antwaan Randle El and TE Chris Cooley). For the Eagles, I think you have to go with QB Donovan McNabb, RB Brian Westbrook, and WR Reggie Brown at home on MNF despite their lackluster performances last week in Green Bay. Look for the Eagles to shake the rust off in week two on MNF with the whole world watching.
