NFL Fantasy Matchups - Week 14

Bring on NFL Fantasy Football Week 14! Check here each Thursday for game-by-game fantasy analysis. We give fantasy owners the edge heading into each week of the NFL fantasy season

Chicago Bears (5-7) @ Washington Redskins (5-7) 8:00 TNF NFLN
After last week's death of Redskin safety Sean Taylor and this week's funeral, the focus of the Skins has been on anything but football. For the second week in a row, the memory of Taylor will be with the Washington team and their fans as they host the Bears on Thursday Night Football. The Bears enter Washington with Adrian Peterson at running back...who should do well in this game. I also like Bernard Berrian here as QB Rex Grossman favors him in the Chicago passing offense. For the Redskins, stick with RB Clinton Portis...but the tragedy of emotions and lack of preparation may take it's toll on the team's football chances this week. Don't be surprised if the Bears win this game big.

The Panthers trouble at quarterback has overflowed to some awful play on offense. And it won't get any easier this week as they head to Jacksonville on Sunday to face a tough Jaguar team. With the issues at QB, even WR Steve Smith has been a miss most of the season. At running back, the Panthers have alternated between DeShaun Foster and DeAngelo Williams (which makes either a risky play each week). For the Jags, I like QB David Garrard in this game...but there isn't the confidence in Jax wide receivers to select a player worthy of fantasy consideration. On the ground, RB Maurice Jones-Drew should be able to tear up the Panther run defense...although MJD will lose a few carries to Fred Taylor.

Miami Dolphins (0-12) @ Buffalo Bills (6-6) 1:00 CBS
Just when we all thought Miami had a chance to win a game last week, the hapless Jets stood up and blew them out. Fantasy speaking, there is absolutely zero fantasy value with any of the Dolphin players. For Buffalo, RB Marshawn Lynch is still banged up...but is scheduled to practice on Thursday. Signs are promising that Lynch may be able to play (if not, Fred Jackson will start for the Bills). Either Lynch or Jackson are worthwhile fantasy starts against the lousy Fins run D, but check closer to gametime before inking your starter into your lineup. Trent Edwards will start again at quarterback for the Bills, but isn't exactly a starting fantasy QB for anyone in their FFL playoffs (even if it is Miami). Lee Evans will be Edwards' top target and should do well this week.

San Diego Chargers (7-5) @ Tennessee Titans (7-5) 1:00 CBS
Either San Diego or Tennessee is capable of putting out a solid effort on both sides of the ball. The Titan D is resepectable, but still start RB LaDainian Tomlinson and TE Antonio Gates with confidence. QB Philip Rivers and WR Chris Chambers are no more than average plays on the road at Tennessee. For the Titans on offense, QB Vince Young has done little for fantasy owners and has been inconsistent at best (most of the Tennessee wins have been a result of solid defense and ball control by the offense). Speaking of Young, he's thrown only 7 TDs against 14 interceptions for a lousy passer rating of 68.9. The consequence has been a Titan passing offense where the top 2 Titan WRs (Justin Gage and Roydell Williams) have barely 1000 yards and only 4 TDs between them. RB LenDale White is still suffering from a finger dislocation and is borderline this week. If he plays, he'll still lose carries to Chris Brown...making either an ill-advised fantasy starter.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers (8-4) @ Houston Texans (5-7) 1:00 FOX
Head coach Jon Gruden has this Bucs team grooving. The offense is on track despite few stars and the defense is booming. Fantasywise, Earnest Graham has been playing very well and is a nice play this week. QB Jeff Garcia, however, is still suffering from a back bruise he suffered in week 12 (and although he may play this week...he's not a highly recommended fantasy starter). WR Joey Galloway is coming off a 159 yard game against the Saints and is a near must-start each week. For Houston, QB Matt Schaub (left shoulder) probably won't be good enough to go...although WR Andre Johnson is always a strong play if healthy. The Houston ground game has had issues all season...Ahman Green has been hurt and Ron Dayne isn't a quality back (especially against a stout Tampa Bay defense).

Oakland Raiders (4-8) @ Green Bay Packers (10-2) 1:00 CBS
Oakland heads North to play a rested Green Bay team. QB Josh McCown had a nice week 13, but McCown isn't fantasy material at this point in the season (esp. given Oakland's record and the eventual emergence of rookie JaMarcus Russell). At running back, Justin Fargas may do okay...but not enough to make him your starter unless completely desperate. For the Pack on offense, Brett Favre should keep his record intact and get the start...but Favre is banged up and faces a tough Oakland secondary. Nonetheless, WR Greg Jennings is hot at the moment and is tough to keep from fantasy lineups. Donald Driver and Jame Jones, however, may be tougher to start given the situation. TE Donald Lee may be worthwhile for leagues requiring a tight end, but not worth a substitution as a wide receiver or flex player. The Pack will mostly try to run the ball with RB Ryan Grant (who has looked like a top 5 back of late and is a great start this week in Green Bay).

Dallas Cowboys (11-1) @ Detroit Lions (6-6) 1:00 FOX
The Cowboys will destroy Detroit's defense. Start QB Tony Romo, WR Terrell Owens, and TE Jason Witten with extreme confidence. Both RBs (Marion Barber and Julius Jones) and #2 WR Patrick Crayton should also do well as Dallas lays 40 on this D. For Detroit, Jon Kitna and Mike Martz will be without WR Roy Williams for the remainder of the season. WR Calvin Johnson hasn't played up to expectations, but may do okay this week after Detroit gets down early and has to pass every down. WR Shaun McDonald may also produce somewhat, but don't expect Detroit to keep up with the Dallas offense. RB Kevin Jones has the versatility to put up some all-around numbers if the Lions can toss it to him out of the backfield.

New York Giants (8-4) @ Philadelphia Eagles (5-7) 1:00 FOX
Just how does Eli Manning keep looking miserable and still winning games? Other than Vince Young's horrible ratio, Manning stands out with his league leading 17 interceptions against 17 TDs with a mere 74.2 passer rating (fortunately, many FFLs don't penalize for negative stats). Take your chances on Manning if you like, but he's probably better left on your bench. Continue to watch Plaxico Burress' status and start him if he plays. TE Jeremy Shockey ranks 8th in fantasy production for tight ends to date...which is down from preseason expectations. On the ground, Derrick Ward was placed on IR due to a fractured fibula this week and Brandon Jacobs has a lingering hamstring injury...it's unkonwn whether Jacobs will play or Reuben Droughns will get the not (either will have his hands full this week against a solid Eagles D). For Philly, Donovan McNabb is probable and head coach Andy Reid is saying that he'll start against the Giants - although I believe there are much better options than McNabb in the fantasy world. As always start RB Brian Westbrook, but any of the Philly wide receivers are a bit more of a gamble.

St. Louis Rams (3-9) @ Cincinnati Bengals (4-8) 1:00 FOX
Discount the combined 7-17 record of these two teams. This game is going to be a shootout with a huge number of points scored against a couple of cheesecloth defenses. Play all of your Rams and Bengals this week...including QB Marc Bulger, WR Torry Holt, and RB Steven Jackson for the Rams -and- QB Carson Palmer with WRs Chad Johnson, T.J. Houshmandzadeh, and Chris Henry for the Bengals. Cincy RB Kenny Watson is a better play than Rudi Johnson at this point in the Bengal backfield (although Rudi will split the carries with Watson for Cincinnati).

Arizona Cardinals (6-6) @ Seattle Seahawks (8-4) 4:05 FOX
With stud WRs Larry Fitzgerald and Anquan Boldin potentially out for the Cardinals, QB Kurt Warner will be looking at Bryant Johnson as his number one target against Seattle (Johnson becomes a great play this week). On the ground, RB Edgerrin James has 246 carries through 12 games (most in NFL) and you can bet he'll see at least another 20 carries this week. For the Seahawks, they should light up the Arizona D. Play QB Matt Hasselbeck with WRs Deion Branch and Bobby Engram (D.J. Hackett is most likely out again, but expected to return in week 15 against Carolina). RB Shaun Alexander played well last week...and there is no reason he shouldn't be started against the Cards if still on your roster.

Minnesota Vikings (6-6) @ San Francisco 49ers (3-9) 4:05 FOX
This one could get ugly really quick. Adrian Peterson may have another 300 yard / 3 TD games against this D. For the Niners, Frank Gore will have his hands full against one of the league's top rushing defenses. TE Vernon Davis may be the best play for San Francisco.

Kansas City Chiefs (4-8) @ Denver Broncos (5-7) 4:15 CBS
Both of these teams usually play each other closely, but neither team has been consistent this season. For KC on offense, RB Kolby Smith could do something here. TE Tony Gonzalez and WR Dwayne Bowe are both decent fantasy plays, but QB Brodie Croyle hasn't done enough this season to deserve a roster spot in FFLs. For Denver, much depends upon which team shows up. QB Jay Cutler is an average fantasy play and won't be in the starting lineup of most playoff bound FFL teams. RB Travis Henry somehow won his suspension appeal and will play this weekend against the Chiefs. Henry and Selvin Young will battle it out on the field with the victor yet to be determined (collectively, the Broncos will produce some nice stats at running back...but it's still anyone's guess as who handles the bulk of the load). WR Javon Walker is back on the field, but hasn't yet looked at full strength...play Walker with caution this week.

This may be the week where Pittsburgh gets beaten handily. QB Ben Roethlisberger has done well this season, but I don't like him this week against New England. RB Willie Parker has put up some big yardage this year, but has made it into the endzone just twice. For New England, start QB Tom Brady, WRs Randy Moss / Wes Welker / Donte Stallworth, RB Laurence Maroney, and TE Benjamin Watson (even though Watson dropped a couple of easy passes against Baltimore).

Cleveland Browns (7-5) @ New York Jets (3-9) 4:15 CBS
Cleveland's Derek Anderson should have a field day passing on the Jets. Play Anderson with WR Braylon Edwards and TE Kellen Winslow (all should do well here). I also like RB Jamal Lewis on the ground for the Browns. For NYJ, RB Thomas Jones may do something (Jones has 231 rushes this season and there's no reason to believe he won't get another 20+ with his 2nd TD this week)...Jones is about the extent of comfortable fantasy plays for the Jets despite a weak Cleveland defense.

Indianapolis Colts (10-2) @ Baltimore Ravens (4-8) SNF 8:15 NBC
Baltimore wants some revenge after Indy beat them in Baltimore during last year's playoffs. But the Ravens may have worn themselves out against New England and will have a tough time duplicating the effort this week. As long as the weather is decent, I think you still play Colts QB Peyton Manning, WR Reggie Wayne, TE Dallas Clark, and RB Joseph Addai with confidence (this offense is just too good and these players contribute each and every week). WR Marvin Harrison may also play, but I'll believe that when I see it. For Baltimore, RB Willis McGahee is a stud and should be started in all formats. We'll see what happens, but I believe Indy wins this game going away.

New Orleans Saints (5-7) @ Atlanta Falcons (3-9) MNF 8:30 ESPN
Saints QB Drew Brees and the New Orleans Saints are coming down to crunch time with only 4 games left in the season. Fortunately for the Saints, only 5 of 16 NFC teams have winning records...so New Orleans still has a chance. I like Brees this week at Atlanta. RB Reggie Bush and WR Marques Colston are also great plays for New Orleans. For Atlanta, TE Alge Crumpler is worth a start only if your league requires a tight end. If the Saints don't win this week by at least two TDs, I doubt they make the playoffs. If there was ever a time to get their team on track, it's this Monday Night.
