Pre-Draft Team Needs: New Orleans Saints

The New Orleans Saints will be looking to get back to the playoffs after missing out on the post season in 2007. We're taking a look at what they need to do to get back there.

Players Added

Mark Brunell/QB - He'll take over the No. 2 role for Jamie Martin.

Matt Lehr/OL - He's slated to compete for the starting center job against Jonathan Goodwin.

Bobby McCray/DE - He'll offer depth at the position as well as a situational pass rushing role.

Jonathan Vilma/MLB - If healthy, Vilma will be a major upgrade inside.

Dan Morgan/LB - Surprisingly, he's slated to play on the weak-side.

Randall Gay/CB - He'll compete for a starting job against Jason David who is coming off of a disappointing season.

Aaron Glenn/CB - He'll play in their dime package.

Players Lost

Jamie Martin/QB - We're told he still wants to play but he hasn't received any interest and Brunell was signed to take his place on the roster.

Jeff Faine/C - He signed for big money with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Renaldo Wynn/DE - The versatile veteran defensive lineman should be able to find a job by the start of training camps.

Brian Simmons/LB - He didn't accept a pay cut and is still looking for a job.

Fred Thomas/CB - The team signed Glenn to replace him.

Jay Bellamy/S - He's been on and off their roster for several years.

Steve Gleason/S - He announced his retirement and his presence will be missed on special teams.

Olindo Mare/K - The inconsistent kicker found a job with the Seattle Seahawks.

Pre-Draft Team Needs

1) Defensive Tackle - All the team has at this position are a pair of aging veterans in Brian Young and Hollis Thomas. Don't be surprised if the team selects two defensive tackles in the draft.

2) Cornerback - After a disappointing performance from Jason David last season and with veteran CB Mike McKenzie coming back from ACL surgery, the team is in need of another talented cornerback.

3) Center - With Jeff Faine signing with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, that leaves Jonathan Goodwin and recently the signed Matt Lehr as his replacements. Both are seen as downgrades.

4) Tight End - The team is interested in Jeremy Shockey and general managers from both teams were seen talking at the owners meetings (of course both sides could have been talking about anything). Veteran TE Eric Johnson is on a one-year deal and the team is clearly looking to upgrade the position.
