Pre-Draft Team Needs-San Francisco 49ers

The San Francisco 49ers missed the playoffs again last year for the fifth straight season. What do they have to do go get back to the post season? Details inside...

Players Added

J.T. O'Sullivan/QB - He'll be expected to handle the No. 3 role.

DeShaun Foster/RB - He'll handle the No. 2 role and has plenty of starting experience should Frank Gore get hurt.

Isaac Bruce/WR - He probably has about two years of solid production left in him and he's a Mike Martz favorite.

Bryant Johnson/WR - He took the one offer he got which was for one season. But Johnson will get a chance to start which is really what he was looking for. Whether he's a good fit for offensive coordinator Mike Martz's scheme remains to be seen.

Justin Smith/DE - He'll be playing in the 3-4 for the first time in his career but he has the size to handle the move.

Dontarrious Thomas/LB - He'll vie for playing time inside.

Allen Rossum/CB-KR-PR - The explosive veteran returner should boost their return game.

Players Lost

Trent Dilfer/QB - He apparently still wants to play but it won't be for the 49ers.

Maurice Hicks/RB - He'll handle kickoffs for the Minnesota Vikings.

Darrell Jackson/WR - He turned out to be one of the worst acquisitions by the team in recent memory as the team got rid of him after just one season.

Justin Smiley/G - San Francisco had little interest in re-signing him yet Smiley got good money to sign with the Miami Dolphins. Adam Snyder is expected to replace him in the lineup.

Larry Allen/G - He's unsigned and is expected to retire.

Kwame Harris/OT - He was disappointment as a first-round pick but Harris still was able to find a new home with the Oakland Raiders.

Bryant Young/DE - The veteran lineman has decided to retire after 14 seasons of play.

Marques Douglas/DE - The versatile end signed with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Justin Smith will replace him in the starting lineup.

Derek Smith/ILB - He was released and found a job with the San Diego Chargers just a few hours later. Dontarrious Thomas will compete for the starting job vacated by Smith.

Pre-Draft Team Needs

Wide Receiver - While the team has some depth at the position, they lack true playmakers. And keep in mind new offensive coordinator Mike Martz used more four-receiver sets with the Detroit Lions than any team in the NFL last season--No. 4 WR Shaun McDonald had 79 catches last season.

Outside Linebacker - The defense only posted 31 sacks last season which is actually a drop of three from the previous season. The hope is that promising young OLB Manny Lawson will help in that area but he still has a lot to prove.

Right Tackle - Starting LT Jonas Jennings has been moved to RT but Jennings has missed 27 games over the past three seasons so he can't be counted on at all. Second-year OT Joe Staley has been moved to LT which is seen as his natural position.

Guard - Veteran LG Larry Allen is unsigned and is expected to retire and RG Justin Smiley signed with the Miami Dolphins. With both starters out of the picture, that leaves two openings. Adam Snyder and David Baas are slated to replace them but some question whether either player is an upgrade.
