Pre-Draft Team Needs: New England Patriots

The New England Patriots got to the Super Bowl but didn't win the big game. What do they have to do to get back there and get it done this time? Details inside...

Players Added

Sam Aiken/WR - He's one of the best special teams players in the league and will help upgrade that area.

Victor Hobson/LB - He can play inside or outside in their 3-4 scheme but is probably best suited to play inside on the strong-side.

T.J. Slaughter/LB - The versatile linebacker can back up at a few spots and he'll also play on special teams.

Jason Webster/CB - The journeyman defensive back will likely handle their nickel role.

Fernando Bryant/CB - He's the favorite to replace Samuel in the starting lineup.

Lewis Sanders/CB - He'll play in their dime defense and on special teams. He also gives them some size at the position.

Tank Williams/S - He'll compete for playing time as a backup.

Players Lost

Troy Brown/WR - He's not sure that he wants to play again but he could wind up being an assistant coach with the Patriots down the road.

Donte' Stallworth/WR - He got a decent deal to be a starter with the Cleveland Browns. Truth be told that he lost his starting job to Jabar Gaffney last season.

Kyle Brady/TE - The 36-year old blocking tight end is without a job.

Junior Seau/ILB - The 39-year old linebacker is still wanted by the Patriots but he won't decide if he wants to play until July at the earliest.

Rosevelt Colvin/OLB - He's coming back from a serious foot injury so he may not be able to play any time soon.

Chad Scott/CB - He was expected to play in a reserve role year but missed the entire season due to injury.

Randall Gay/CB - He'll be given a chance to start but is best used in nickel situations.

Eugene Wilson/S - He's actually slated to play cornerback initially with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers but some feel he's better off staying at cornerback.

Asante Samuel/CB - He got big money to sign with the Philadelphia Eagles.

Mel Mitchell/S - The special teamer remains unsigned.

Pre-Draft Team Needs

Inside Linebacker - Seau is unsigned and fellow veteran Tedy Bruschi turns 35 soon. The team hasn't selected a true linebacker before the fifth round since the 2000 draft but they might have to start thinking about doing something about that next weekend. Depth remains an issue as well.

Cornerback - With Samuel gone for good, a starting job is clearly open and there's no one left on the roster to replace him. The team signed a few veterans as insurance but none of them are seen as the long-term solution.

Outside Linebacker - With Colvin Jettisoned, a starting job remains open. The team could move Adalius Thomas outside full-time. Depth is an issue here.

Right Guard - Starter Stephen Neal missed 11 games over the past two seasons due to injury and he turns 32 in October. At the very least, the team needs some younger depth at the position.
