Pre-Draft Team Needs: Houston Texans

The Houston Texans made marked improvement last season. We're taking a look at the areas that are in need of upgrading as we get closer to the NFL draft.

Players Added

Quinn Gray/QB - He'll handle the No. 3 job with the only team to offer him a contract.

Chris Brown/RB - He'll back up Ahman Green.

Chris Myers/C - He was acquired from the Denver Broncos and will be expected to start.

Chaun Thompson/LB - He signed with Houston because they will give him a chance to start at SLB.

Kevin Bentley/LB - He'll compete for the starting SLB job against Thompson.

Jacques Reeves/CB - The former Dallas Cowboy will get a realistic chance to start with his new team.

Nick Ferguson/S - He'll get a chance to start at FS.

Players Lost

Ron Dayne/RB - Despite putting up decent numbers last season, Dayne will not be re-signed.

Jeb Putzier/TE - He found a new home with the Seattle Seahawks who will give him a chance to start.

Mike Flanigan/C - He was released last month and is still without a job.

Steve McKinney/C - Like Flanigan, McKinney was released recently and is out of work.

Fred Weary/G - He started 24 games for Houston over the past two seasons yet he's unsigned.

Cedric Killings/DT - He's expected to retire.

Danny Clark/LB - He signed with the New York Giants who will give him a chance to start likely at WLB.

Charlie Anderson/LB - The backup linebacker found a new home with the Miami Dolphins.

Shawn Barber/LB - The veteran linebacker is still looking for work.

Roc Alexander/CB - He remains unsigned.

Von Hutchins/CB - He played mostly safety last season but is expected to play cornerback in 2008 with the Atlanta Falcons.

Jason Simmons/S - The backup safety remains unsigned.

Michael Boulware/S - He's struggled in the transition from playing linebacker in college. Boulware has found a new home as a backup with the Minnesota Vikings.

Pre-Draft Team Needs

Left Tackle - Charles Spencer was seen as the long-term starter until he suffered a broken leg early in his rookie season. Spencer may be moved inside to guard and an upgrade over veteran LT Ephraim Salaam is needed.

Running Back - While there's some depth at this position, starter Ahman Green is 31 and is coming off of knee problems from last season. Chris Brown is only seen as a backup. The team needs to figure out who is the future at this position ASAP.

Right Guard - This job remains open on an offensive line that showed very good improvement last season.

Defensive End - Other than Mario Williams, who had a breakout season in 2007, the defense lacks enough quality pass rushers.
