|The New England Patriots managed to do something that was expected - to trade down and still get a player that fit their system. New England dealt their 1st round pick (No 7) and 5th round pick to the New Orleans Saints for the Saints 1st round pick (No 10) and the Saints 3rd round pick. New England's decision to select Jerod Mayo out of Tennessee was a perfect move for a team in desperate need of youth at the linebacker position. The Patriots considered Vernon Gholston, but with the Jets taking Gholston at 6, the move back made sense. The Patriots can look to the second or third rounds to address their other need, cornerback. - Jon Scott, Patriots Insider|
|As Scout.com noted in recent weeks, there were teams that had Mayo ahead of Keith Rivers as the top linebacker. Mayo plays with good intelligence which is why New England felt they could take him off the board here. Mayo is a good run defender who will improve in coverage the more he gets to be on the field.|
