Player Chilo Rachal, OG, USC
Team San Francisco 49ers
Pick Round 2, Selection 8 (39 Overall)
Stats Ht: 6-4.5   Wt: 315   40: 5.25
With projected starting right guard David Baas out at least until training camp after undergoing surgery this week to repair a torn pectoral muscle, the 49ers passed on some of the top offensive tackle prospects still on the board and went for one of the draft's highest-rated guards to bolster their offensive line, which lost two starters to free agency during the offseason and another to expected retirement. Rachal adds depth along the offensive line that was essential for the 49ers to get out of this draft, and he also is a starting candidate since both of San Francisco's opening-day starters at guard last year - Justin Smiley and Larry Allen - are no longer with the team. The Niners like Rachal's strong and powerful makeup and, since he's coming out as a junior, figure his best days surely are ahead. - Craig Massei,
With the loss of both starting guards, depth became an issue so the team selected Rachal here although some believe this player may have been available later in the round.
