AFC West Final Report Card

For the second season in succession, the AFC West division was clearly the weakest division within the conference. After a great start the Broncos faded down the stretch, while their long time rivals, the Raiders and Chiefs are not near ready to compete within the division.

2009 Prognosis Assenting slightly

Comments: I guess it can be said the Chargers were good when they had to be. I can't say enough about the work of Philip Rivers who has totally surpassed all of the other quarterbacks from the remarkable draft class of 2004. They are going to have to improve at the safety position and the very talented Cromartie is going to have to rebound from what I considered an abomination of a season in 2008. .

2009 Prognosis Descending

Comments: Playing in without question the absolute weakest conference in the AFC, the Denver needed just one win in the final three games of the season to insure a playoff birth, but as we now know the Broncos could not close the deal and their failure ultimately cost head coach Mike Shanahan, one of the top coaches in the game, his job. Unless the Broncos can significantly upgrade their undersized defensive front, offensive line and running game, they run the risk of sinking further in the division. I don't like the front office, froth with nepotism, turning these things around quickly.

2009 Prognosis Developing stage – two season's away

Comments: You know this club is getting better, but what scares me is the fact that the future lies in this once proud football club lies in the right arm of an individual who after two seasons on the job (one and a half as a starter) has not made the significant strides expected of the player selected with the first selection in the 2007 player draft. Zack Miller (selected in the same draft), has a chance to develop into something very special and the Raiders an excellent three headed monster at the running back position headed by 2008 top selection Darren McFadden. McFadden showed some very early promise, but played less than 100 % physically for the majority of the season. Defensively the Raiders still lack consistency that was the hallmark of all of the great Raiders clubs, but in corner Nnamdi Asomugha they have easily one of the top corners in the NFL.

2009 Prognosis Rebuilding - Bleak

Comments: It's going to be extremely difficult to build a winner in Kansas City without a proficient person pulling the trigger and based on what I have seen over the last three seasons, the Chiefs rank dead last in this, the most critical of all skill areas. Granted the Chiefs were very young and inexperienced on both sides of the football, but other than the fact that the team never threw in the towel, I didn't see much that I liked about this football club play in 2008. Expect the Chiefs under new GM Scott Paoli to start the rebuilding process quickly
