Minnesota Vikings Free Agent Confidential

The Vikings could conceivably cut ties with each and every player currently on their 2009 UFA list. Safety Michael Boulware and Jim Kleinsasser appear to be the most likely of the group to return although what has become essential is for the club to make a decision on their QB for the future.

Comments - The Vikings have seriously overpaid veteran offensive center Matt Birt and I would think he would have to restructure his deal significantly if he were to return in 2009. Look for second year player to take oer at the position in 2009. Jim Kleinsasser was beaten out by former Giants back up Visanthe Shiancoe and the veteran Darren Sharper were good players, but in recent years skills have slipped significantly. It would be a mild surprise if either returns in 2009. Even as a short term investment, I don't believe re-signing them would be a prudent football decision. Michael Boulware who spent the year on injured reserve after suffering a broken wrist in the preseason, could well replace Sharper. Jimmy Kennedy a former top selection of the Rams, has been a colossal failure as a professional. He lacks quickness, range and is weak as a kitten. The rest of the group which includes nickel back Benny Sapp, inside backer Napoleon Harris and the injured Kenderick Allen are journeymen player at best and not likely to return. I fully expect the Vikings to get into the Losman quarterback sweepstakes and believe if they don't, their chances of taking that next major step, will be extremely difficult. Kenechi.Udeze is clearly the most talented of all of the Viking free agents, but he's fighting a much bigger battle with his health. I along with football fans everywhere, wish him the very best in his recovery.
