The Chargers moved past the one hundred and fifteen million dollar on the 2009 cap, but believes it can still attempt to upgrade the club at the wide receiver and the safety positions.

Comments - After losing prized running back Michael Turner to the Falcons via free agency last season , the Chargers were not about to lose explosive back up Darren Sproles and placed a non explosive franchise tag on the four year veteran and will be compensated with two number one selections should he be signed by a competing club during the period. Darren Sproles is a solid contributor both as a reserve running back and as a kick off return man. The Chargers would just had to have him back, particularly with LaDainian Tomlinson entering his 9th season in the professional game, but I'm just not certain a franchise designation was necessary. The oft injured Jeremy Newberry is a seasoned veteran who played particularly well when called up in 08, but along with Mike Goff are at this stage of their careers are not likely to be give much in the way of consideration as free agents within the league and more than likely at least two will return to the fold. Marques Harris is a developing back up, who has flashed some impressive skills during his brief playing career, but overall I believe the Chargers to be a little disappointed in his play in 2008. The Chargers have never been a major player in the free agency market, but look for them to possibly take a shot at some targeted free agents from this years class.
