Strengths: Thompson is a playmaking cornerback with a penchant for the spectacular. He’s smooth off the line and loses nothing in transition. He has great awareness, reads the quarterback and has an understanding of where the ball will be thrown before it’s in the air. He keeps the action in front of him, quickly breaks on the throw and possesses a burst of closing speed. He reacts well to a play and possesses the ball skills to record an interception. He has value as a punt returner.
Weaknesses: He lacks ideal size and can be a liability on the outside. He plays off the line and doesn’t challenge receivers consistently. He’s not an aggressive tackler against the run; he gets caught up in the trash. He lacks great recovery speed and will give up big plays.Steuber Says: It was a down year this past season for Thompson, as he went from four interceptions in 2008 to just one in 2009. Thompson is a great playmaker, but his size and inconsistent play is an issue. He has lockdown corner ability, but it’s never come to fruition. He will have to show scouts this off-season that he can handle himself out on the island and compete against all types of wide receivers.
