Strengths: Pierre-Paul is an intriguing, raw pass rushing prospect who has tremendous athleticism and upside. He’s versatile and can play with his hand in the dirt or standing up. He has an elite frame, long reach and natural physical gifts. He has an explosive first step, uses his length to his advantage and displays the speed and strength to be a terror off the edge. He shows good awareness and locates the ball immediately. He flashes the ability to pursue in space and track down the ballcarrier from behind. He’s a project who has a passion for the game and can develop into a great player if he’s in the right situation.

Weaknesses: He has to improve his overall technique, especially the use of his hands. He doesn’t shed blocks consistently and gets engulfed easily. He has great quickness, but his balance, body control and strength have to get better. He has to learn the fundamentals and work on his tackling technique. He’s extremely raw and is a boom or bust prospect.

Steuber Says: A former JUCO standout and a one-year sensation at South Florida, Pierre-Paul possesses the natural gifts and physical attributes necessary to be an elite pass rusher at the next level. At 6-foot-6, 265 pounds, Pierre-Paul’s imposing frame and unique quickness allowed him to generate a breakthrough junior campaign where he recorded 45 tackles, 16.5 for a loss, 6.5 sacks and an interception. Known for his amazing YouTube video where he did a sequence of 13 back flips as part of a challenge with his South Florida teammates, Pierre-Paul is the type of athlete who will thrive at the Scouting Combine and at his Pro Day. But when you turn on the film and watch him compete during games, you can see how raw he is and how much better he has to get. This time of year suits Pierre-Paul perfectly, because it’s all about potential and upside and how athletic you are, while the flaws you may have on the field are forgotten. With that said, Pierre-Paul’s draft stock is all over the place; scouts believe he could go as high as No. 3 overall to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers or as low as No. 24 overall to the Philadelphia Eagles.
