Scouting Report: Spencer Nead

Due to spending two years on a religious mission, Spencer Neal's age (25) will push him deep into the draft. But the two-year starter with soft hands is a solid pass-catching tight end that should benefit any quarterback in the redzone.

Name:  Spencer Nead  School:  BYU      Year:  5Sr

Ht:  6-4  Wt:  258  40:  5.01  Pos:  TE

Bio: Two-year starter who posted career numbers as a senior catching 40 passes for 449 yards and 1 score, on his way to being named second team All MWC.  Saw extensive action the prior season when he garnered All-Conference consideration catching 22/266/5.  Formerly spent time at Rick's Junior College after spending two  years on religious mission.  Will be 25 years old next September.

Pos: Solid pass-catching tight end best in the short field.  Consistently finds the open spot in the defense, settles into the open spot in the underneath coverage and extends his hands, catching the ball away from his body.  Adjusts well to the errant throw and is a solid athlete who can extend vertically and beat out defenders for the high throw.  Comes back to the quarterback, displays soft hands, and is aggressive running after the catch.  Looks like a runaway locomotive in the open field and barrels over tacklers.

Neg:  Runs well but only marginal speed and does not make plays into the defensive secondary.  Seemingly lacks a sense of timing to his game.  Rarely used on the line as

a blocker.

Analysis: Age, poor timed speed, and lack of blocking experience will push him deep into
