Strengths: McCarthy is an aggressive safety who’s best in run support. He possesses great instincts and awareness, and fights hard until the whistle blows. He’s disciplined in coverage, stays with assignments and keeps the action in front of him. He has good ball skills and demonstrates surprising playmaking skills. He flashes on the scene, lays his shoulders into ball carriers and goes for the knockout blow. He’s a solid special teams player.
Weaknesses: He has to get stronger and get off blocks better in the box. He lacks sideline-to-sideline range and doesn’t always get to the right spot in coverage. He’s stiff in the hips and doesn’t transition fluidly.Steuber Says: A two-year starter at Notre Dame, McCarthy is a hard worker and had a career year in 2009, recording 101 tackles and five interceptions in 12 games. He’s proven to be a durable defender and has a great work ethic. Scouts will be impressed with him on and off the field. McCarthy will receive third round consideration, but is likely to come off the board in the fifth round.
