Pre-Draft Team Needs: Kansas City Chiefs

The Chiefs will make a stronger commitment to the running game with the addition of veteran RB Thomas Jones.

Players Added

Thomas Jones/RB - This is probably one of the NFL's best free agency signings. The Chiefs need to do more power running in order to keep their suspect defense off the field. Jones will team with Jamaal Charles to form of the league's best 1-2 running back tandems in the league.

Jerheme Urban/WR - Urban is not a bad possession receiver. He'll compete for the No.3 job.

Casey Wiegmann/C - He'll compete for the starting center job against Rudy Niswanger.

Ryan Lilja/OL - A source said the reason why he was released by the Indianapolis Colts was because of a flunked physical. However, he had no problem passing Kansas City's. Lilja figures to compete for the starting RG job.

Shaun Smith/DT - He'll probably back up at both end and nose tackle.

Players Lost

Devard Darling/WR - He was released in March and is still looking for work.

Bobby Wade/WR - He did a decent job for a short period of time after being signed off the street last season.

Sean Ryan/TE - The blocking tight end will compete for a job with the Washington Redskins.

Wade Smith/OL - The versatile offensive lineman will compete for a starting job with the Houston Texans.

Andy Alleman/OL - He found a new home with the Indianapolis Colts.

Mike Goff/G - He looks to be at the end of the line of a solid career.

Mike Brown/S - The team will miss his leadership, but Brown simply isn't the same player he once was.

Pre-Draft Team Needs

Right Tackle - Starting LT Branden Albert seen by many personnel evaluators as just average. The other side has a huge question mark.

Guard - They must do everything they can to help protect starting QB Matt Cassel. It all starts up front. Starting G Brian Waters turned 33 earlier this year and probably won't play much longer. Lilja needs to show that he's ready to start at the other guard spot.

Outside Linebacker - This team had an embarrassing 22 sacks last season.

Tight End - The team has a bunch of backup types on their roster. Third-year pro Brad Cottam has flashed some talent, but hasn't been nearly as consistent as needed.

Safety - FS Jarrad Page missed 11 games last season due to injury, but is seen as an average starter. 2008 second-round pick DaJuan Morgan started just two games last season. The bottom line is this position needs to get a lot more production in next season and beyond.

Wide Receiver - Behind starters Chris Chambers and Dewayne Bowe is very little. They probably need to add 1-2 decent young receivers in this draft.
