Texans Early Bird 53 Man Roster

An early bird 53 man roster prediction before the preseason games start.

Before the Houston Texans take the field, we give our quick 53 man roster before the games start separating players in the depth chart.

Through ten days of training camp and the mini camps and OTAs, here is the early bird 53 man roster.

Offense (25)

Quarterbacks (3)

Ryan Fitzpatrick, Tom Savage, Case Keenum

Not sold on Keenum as the back up to this point. Savage will be here to develop, but the quarterback situation is troubling.

Running Back (4)

Arian Foster, Jonathan Grimes, Alfred Blue, Jay Prosch

The biggest omission is Andre Brown and it has to do with the emergence of Grimes and Blue. All three of the Texans running backs can be three down backs, Grimes gets the nod because of his ability to play special teams.

Tight Ends (3)

Garrett Graham, C.J. Fiedorowicz, Ryan Griffin

Pretty much set in stone.

Wide Receivers (6)

Andre Johnson, DeAndre Hopkins, DeVier Posey, Mike Thomas, Keshawn Martin, Uzoma Nwachukwu

Nwachukwu to this point has played himself into a roster spot. With the amount of pace the offense is going to play with, the Texans better have enough wide receivers to keep up.

Offensive Tackle (4)

Duane Brown, Derek Newton, Will Yeatmen, Matt Feiler

Offensive Guards (4)

Brandon Brooks, Xavier Su’a-Filo, Alex Kupper, Ben Jones

Center (1)

Chris Myers

The offensive line is a sticky situation and it starts at offensive tackle. Despite being signed, Tyson Clabo has a long way to go to prove he belongs on the team. Better to keep the upside of Bloomsburg product Matt Feiler.

Defense (25)

Defensive Line (6)

Jerrell Powe, Ricardo Mathews, Louis Nix, J.J. Watt, Jared Crick, Jeoffrey Pagan

The Texans will be able to play big on the defensive line with Powe, Mathews, Nix and Pagan. How Watt is used in the defense will be something to watch.

Outside Linebacker (4)

Jadeveon Clowney, Brooks Reed, Whitney Mercilus, Quentin Groves

This group has become better with the Clowney addition and looks to be a rotation set up for the season. If Groves doesn’t hold his spot, look for rookie Jason Ankrah to be a factor is he can put it together in the preseason.

Inside Linebacker (5)

Brian Cushing, Akeem Dent, Justin Tuggle, Mike Mohamed, Jeff Tarpinian

Tuggle has become a nice surprise with his work during training camp. Mohamed and Tarpinian have been getting some good looks with Cushing and Dent out. Their increased time during camp is only helping the group for the season.

Cornerback (6)

Johnathan Joseph, Kareem Jackson, A.J. Bouye, Brandon Harris, Andre Hal, Elbert Mack

This group needs to find a steady third cornerback and it will be between Bouye and Harris, and Bouye has the leg up in the competition to this point. Hal has been emerging better than expected despite being a late round draft pick.

Safeties (4)

D.J. Swearinger, Kendrick Lewis, Chris Clemons, Jawanza Starling

The Texans will be using three safeties often and having the top three healthy and ready to play is important for the defensive game plan. Starling ends up being a better fit than Keo and Pleasant due to him being a better fit at free safety.

Specialty (3)

Jon Weeks

Shane Lechler

Randy Bullock

The only thing to watch is if rookie kicker Chris Boswell can overtake Bullock for the kicking duties.
