The Houston Texans have stepped up and extended their best defensive player J.J. Watt with a six year deal worth $100 million with $51.8 guaranteed according to ESPN's Chris Mortenson. Watt's deal makes him the highest paid defender in NFL history, surpassing Mario Williams' contract that he signed with the Buffalo Bills. Watt is set to make a base salary of $907,385 in 2014 and make $9.969 million in 2015, with the deal expiring in 2021.
J.J. Watt Earns His $100 Million Extension
Watt and his agent, Tom Condon, were in discussion with the Texans prior to the season and the defensive end made it clear he wanted to stay in Houston. General Manager Rick Smith and VP of Administration Chris Olsen worked until late Monday with Condon to complete the deal for Watt. The Texans extended Watt after exercising his 5th year option on his rookie deal for 2015 prior to the season starting. There were small grumblings of Watt being displeased with the way contract negotiations were headed, but that is all for naught with his new extension.
This deal comes as little surprise that the Texans took it upon themselves to extend Watt despite being under team control for the coming seasons. Watt, since arriving to Houston in 2011, has been better than expected and turned into one of the top players in the NFL.
He has appeared in 48 regular season games and totaled 217 total tackles with 36.5 sacks and 27 pass deflections. Watt was selected to the Pro Bowl (2012,2013) and named All-Pro (2012,2013) and AP Defensive Player of the Year in 2012.
Locking up Watt will give the Texans a sense of relief with their top player on the roster for the foreseeable future and being able to concentrate on other parts of their roster moving forward.
