The San Francisco 49ers are trying to fill their coaching staff under new head coach Chip Kelly and the Houston Texans staff seems to be a hot commodity. After interviewing and offering the defensive coordinator job to Texans linebacker coach Mike Vrabel, who ended up turning the offer down to return to Houston, the 49ers turned to current Texans defensive back coach John Butler and interviewed him for the defensive coordinator position according to John Middlekauff (CSN Bay Area).
The 49ers ended up hiring Jim O’Neil for the position but Butler being interviewed for the position is an interesting tidbit for the near future. Butler has spent the majority of his coaching career in college and the past four Seasons with head coach Bill O’Brien at Penn State and with the Texans. Butler has turned his secondary into a formidable group over the past two years; a group that makes minimal mistakes as a unit.
With this year’s staff appearing to be set in place for the 2016 season, both Butler and Vrabel will be interesting names to watch over the coming season as other coaching vacancies come open.
