Scouts Take:

Dane Brugler from CBS Sports:

STRENGTHS:

Athletic body type and solidly-built for the position. Extraordinary athleticism and speed with sudden, explosive cutting ability. Tremendous balance and body control in all of his movements.

Multiple gears to separate in his routes or as a ballcarrier. Understands hesitation in his patterns, setting up defenders before bursting in different directions. Vision to be a home-run threat whenever he touches the ball.

In his one season as a receiver, showed the locating ability to track and keep his focus through the catch. Capable of the acrobatic reception. Strong arm as a passer and spins a pretty ball. Deceiving body strength to squirm out of would-be tackles. Highly productive three-year quarterback and looked natural making the transition to a skill player in 2015 - versatile player who affected the game as a receiver and rusher.

Holds several school records and was a two-time Big Ten Offensive Player of the Year. Mature leader and determined individual who wants to be great.

WEAKNESSES

Raw route-runner and lacks experience at the receiver position. Needs work with his footwork, especially at the stem of patterns. Natural hands, but had some drops in 2015, especially with the fastball.

Still learning how to properly adjust to throws and attack at the highest point. Too much east-west and will get himself in trouble looking for the big play. Alligator arms and too concerned with what's going on in the middle of the field - often braced himself for contact or showed tentativeness in space before securing the catch.

Willing blocker, but still very raw and needs technique work. Ball security needs tightened with 30 career fumbles (three fumbles in 2015 as a non-quarterback). Doesn't have any special teams experience.

Health is a concern with his past medical issues - missed two games due a left knee sprain (Sept. 2013); injured his throwing (right) shoulder in the 2013 Orange Bowl that required surgery (Feb. 2014); re-injured the same shoulder that summer (Aug. 2014) and missed the 2014 season after labrum surgery; left game due to concussion symptoms (Nov. 2015).

IN OUR VIEW

After starting three seasons as Ohio State's quarterback, Miller moved to a hybrid H-Back position in 2015 for his final season of eligibility and adapted well. He enters the NFL as a wide receiver or running back, not a quarterback and his 2014 shoulder surgery ended up being a blessing in disguise, allowing Miller to speed up the inevitable transition to a skill position for the next level.

Miller is a gifted and exciting open-field athlete with game-changing speed and the twitched-up ability to be elusive, not slowing down in his cuts. He showed signs of being able to translate his ability to read defenses as a passer to reading coverages in his routes, but is still unpolished in this area and will need time as he continues his development at wide receiver.

The No. 1 concern moving forward for Miller is durability - true competitor, but can he stay healthy? Overall, while still raw, Miller is a special athlete for his size with considerable upside, putting him in the top 50 overall range. He will likely be a gadget player as an NFL rookie before competing for a starting role in year two.

Lance Zierlein from NFL.com:

STRENGTHS

Considered one of the leaders for the winningest senior class in college football history. Immediately checks boxes for height, weight and speed. Features legitimate vertical acceleration to climb over the top on deep routes. Hands are good enough, but concentration is even better. Uses well-timed leaps and dives to make the demanding catches. Capability as a zone-read quarterback create added value. Has loose hips for jitterbug elusiveness in space and it isn?t easy to get a solid hit on him.

WEAKNESSES

Just one year of work at receiver and has limited production as a pass-catcher. Reliant upon speed and athletic ability over skill at the position. Needs major route work. Upright into his routes with very little sell from his upper body to create hesitation from defenders. Not yet ready to work the intermediate routes. Used deep and short. Needs to improve his ball security and get ball tucked away in proper arm.

BOTTOM LINE:

Miller had a storied two-year run at quarterback where he was able to produce explosive, winning plays for the Buckeyes. His transition to a new position will be a work in progress that may last longer than some expect, but his size, speed and athletic traits are appealing. Miller?s ability with the ball in his hands could help his cause, but the difference between being a gadget player and productive receiver will rest with his ability to digest coaching and convert it on the field.

Gordon McGuinness from Pro Football Focus:

Position fit: Spent 293 of his 373 snaps in the slot in 2015.

Stats to know: Forced eight missed tackles from just 28 receptions in 2015.

What he does best:

  •  Makes people miss. Miller’s time at wide receiver has been limited, but we’ve seen him be dynamic with the ball in his hands. Averaging 6.9 yards after the catch per reception, this made up more than half of his 12.5 yards per catch average. A nightmare for defensive players to bring down, he forced eight missed tackles from just 28 receptions this past season
  • Interesting option out of the backfield too. Forced eight missed tackles from 42 rushing attempts, and caught four passes for 28 yards on backfield routes
  • Has the ability to contribute on trick plays. This might make up just a small part of the playbook, but Miller was once the starting quarterback for Ohio State and does have a good enough arm to get the ball downfield on a wide receiver pass when called upon. While it’s not going to be the sole reason a team drafts him, the ability to create big plays is a bonus
  •  Interesting option as a kick returner. Fielded just one kickoff in his college career at the Senior Bowl, but did return it for 39 yards. Given his ability to make people miss in space, a special teams coach might feel he can be developed here.
  • Can win downfield. The Buckeyes didn’t look his way on go routes often, but he did catch all three of the passes thrown his way on them and has the speed to beat cornerbacks deep.
  •  Big-play threat. Given that he had just 28 receptions, it’s worth noting that Miller had three catches of 45 yards or more, and added a 53 yard run. For a player who didn’t really see enough of the ball, he made the most of what he did get.

Biggest concerns:

  • More projection than almost any other prospect in this draft class. For all the excitement he has generated, we are talking about a player who played just 373 snaps at wide receiver, and caught just 28 passes. Is that enough to draft someone on the first or second day of the NFL draft?
  • Needs a lot of work as a route runner. Has very quick feet which help him make people miss in space, but often takes too many steps to make his cut
  •  Need to see more of him against stronger cornerbacks to see how he handles press coverage. At this point he’s a player who got the ball in space and had some success downfield, still needs to work at the basics of the position

Bottom line:

Miller is a fascinating prospect because teams will be left debating production against projection. On a limited amount of snaps at wide receiver we know that he is raw and needs a lot of work, but can be a matchup nightmare in space capable of creating big plays. His athletic ability makes him a candidate to be over drafted, but if a team show the patience to develop him, it could pay off big time.

My Take:

A very raw, but very talented player, the selection of Braxton Miller by the Houston Texans clearly showed how desperately the team wanted to add speed to their skill positions on the roster.

As every college football fan knows, Miller played quarterback at Ohio State until his final season in 2015 when he switched positions to a multiple-threat slot receiver, who also ran the ball a little bit. Miller is a very gifted athlete and showed flashes of great ability at receiver last year, but any expectation for him to come in and make a difference in his rookie season is unreasonable.

He has all of the physical gifts and tools a player would need to excel in the NFL, but with just one year of experience at the position, he’s still very raw and will need two years at least to develop. Miller has great speed and showed quality hands during his limited playing time, but few receivers in this draft will need more work on learning the full route tree and learning how to block outside.

Let this sink in: Miller had just 25 career receptions in college. While gambling on a player with his natural ability is certainly defensible, using a third round pick on a receiver with that little tape at the position is a risky move.

The Texans will most likely try Miller out in the slot first, but while he learns that position expect him to get some time as a returner and maybe even as a wildcat QB with some of the gadget plays Bill O’Brien showed last season.

Defensive line was a bigger need and taking a player as underdeveloped as Miller at 85 feels too high, but he showed great work ethic and determination to comeback from injury and switch positions, so he seems like a player who could take on this challenge and eventually excel.
