It is a new year but Houston Texans outside linebacker Whitney Mercilus wants to pick up where he left off last season. In a breakout season for Mercilus, 2015 marked the first time two Texans defenders registered double digit sacks in a season, as Mercilus racked up 12 sacks, along with 17.5 for J.J. Watt.
Mercilus responded in a big way but he is not resting until he takes his game to another level.
“Things I didn’t do well, I’d say be consistent, especially in the first half of the year and even transitioning into the second half of the year last year,” said Mercilus when critiquing himself.
He pointed to mid-season last year when he felt the need to just cut loose and prove the Texans did the right thing by signing him to an extension prior of the start of the 2015 season. Ten of his twelve sacks came after week seven and Mercilus explained the situation.
“I mean, as a whole defense within the middle of the season, we got a little talking to by the coach, by OB (Bill O’Brien), and he said we need to get the thing going, so I just felt like personally as a player I’ve got to step up my game and try to help the team win. That’s exactly what happened.”
It is clear Mercilus’ confidence has risen. It has been carried onto the field by his play and the example he is displaying to his teammates. The work has just begun but Mercilus is trying to push to the next level for the Texans.
