Bill O’Brien likes to ensure that the Houston Texans are tested throughout training camp and the preseason. He is continuing to put an emphasis on getting the Texans plenty of work during the weeks leading up to the preseason games, making sure that if he can hold joint practices, he does.
“I think it is a pretty good opportunity for us,” said O’Brien of this year’s line up.
|Opponent||Possible Joint Practice Dates||Preseason Game|
|49ers||August 9th-12th (Santa Clara)||August 14th|
|Saints||August 15th-19th (Houston)||August 20th|
Since arriving to the Texans, O’Brien has set up joint practices with the Denver Broncos, Atlanta Falcons, and Washington Redskins. This year, the Texans will hold joint practices with the San Francisco 49ers in Santa Clara, CA, and the New Orleans Saints at the Methodist Training Center in Houston.
“We are looking forward to practicing against San Francisco and New Orleans, two great organizations with great head coaches, great players,” said O’Brien of the upcoming joint practices.
O’Brien has made it a practice to ensure his core players get the majority of their work during joint practices, only to rest them during preseason games. Last season J.J. Watt, Vince Wilfork, and Johnathan Joseph did not play one single preseason snap. This will more than likely be the case also in 2016.
“I think our players and our staff everybody here will gain a lot from that,” explained O’Brien. “I think it breaks up the monotony of camp a little bit. It adds to the competition, you get to see new faces, new schemes.”
The joint practices are a good barometer for a team trying to evaluate players and see what exactly they can do. When given a chance to compete against another team, the coaches can use the film to get a better feel for their personnel.
