Xavier Su'a-Filo Trending Up For the Houston Texans

Houston Texans' Xavier Su'a-Filo picking up where he left off when he finished strong during the 2015 season.

The Houston Texans offensive line appears to be a question about which many outsiders want more insight, especially regarding the anticipated production of the group as a whole. One of the members of that line, Xavier Su'a-Filo, is set to enter his third season with the team since being drafted in the second round out of UCLA.

Bill O’Brien is pleased where Su’a-Filo is now compared to previous season arriving to OTAs.

“He has definitely improved. He’s in better shape. He understands our system better. Just like I was saying about other guys, he has received a ton of reps with the ones.

Sua’-Filo has always seemed to be behind the eight ball the past two seasons. His rookie year, he was late coming to the Texans, missing OTAs and mini-camp as he finished up school at UCLA, who are on a quarterly system. Last season, Su’a-Filo was set to start at left guard, but prior to the first preseason game, he was rolled up on during practice, suffering a high ankle sprain. To make matters worse, his ankle injury turned into a calf injury on the same leg that slowed him as he tried getting back to the field.

Worked back slowly, Su’a-Filo took over the left guard position against the Cincinnati Bengals and proved to be one of the more consistent pieces for the offensive line. That confidence has carried over to OTAs and mini camp, which shows he could live up to his high expectations.

“I’ve seen a lot of improvement with him. The key for the lineman on both sides of the ball is when the pads go on, especially for the young lineman,” explained O’Brien. “That’s really where you make a determination on how much they’ve improved and how good they can be, but to this point, in the unpadded practices, he has made a lot of improvement.”

Su’a-Filo is expected to be on of the starting guards when week one arrives.
